So I just got a DSLR camera...
A canon T1i.. and I was wondering.. is it ok to leave it in the carrying case with it's lens on or off? They all have covers for each end and I was thinking it would be better if i just left it on and modified my bag to fit it. (It has the ability to be custom shaped)
Thanks for the help, I'd rather get an answer from a pro enthusiast or photographer. Thanks.
I always leave my favorite lens on the camera for two reasons. One, it's always ready to go on a moment's notice, and two there's less chance of introducing dust to the camera. Every time you attach and remove a lens, the camera is vulnerable to dust.
The only bad I can possibly see that could come of it, would be if something heavy fell on it and bent or broke the lens mount, but something that heavy would cause damage regardless of whether the lens was attached or not.

I'm heading to Cancun for a week. I'm traveling by air and would keep it in my carry-on bag. As I've never been to Mexico, just wondering how safe it would be along the line with all the people I might have contact with (customs, police, the random person on the street who's up to no good, hotel employees, etc...) It's only a couple hundred dollar camera, and I'd prefer to take it, but would I just be better off taking a couple of cheap disposables?
Yes, it's totally safe. All the hotels have safes now for you to put your valuables in so you won't have to worry about employees from the hotel stealing anything. I do recommend that you take it. The ocean is very blue and taking pictures with your digital camera really brings it to life. Cancún is really safe. I've been going there for ten years and have never once ran into trouble or mischievous people. As with anywhere, just don't leave it sitting out somewhere like by the pool or bar. So, go ahead and take it...you will get some great photos. Have fun...Cancún rocks!!!
Today I took the Greyhound over the US border back into Canada (I'm Canadian) and after the dog apparently smelled something in my bag, they went through to see if I had any drugs. I am never exposed to drugs or had drugs so I have no idea what he was smelling.
After they searched my bag, they frisked me and made me take everything out of my pocket at which point the customs official went through my camera and my phone. As soon as she turned on my camera, she went backwards through my pictures (which happened to be a series of nude photos) and I just kept my mouth shut - better to make nothing of the situation... but is that allowed?
Absolutely, custom agents have the right to go through anything that happens to be in your personal possession. This includes but is not limited to, journals, cameras, laptops, bags and so forth. My brother was in customs for 8 hours as they went through his entire laptop, pulling files and anything else. Its more so a security issue for countries rather than an invasion of privacy. Blame terrorists.
