I use the Canon 420EX flash with the 20D camera and want to mount the flash on a bracket. This requires a cable extension from the hot shoe to the flash. I read that the Canon brand extension cable is not reliable and often breaks after minimal use. Users do not recommend it. I also read that the Adorama clone for this cord does not always work with Canon Flashes. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks.

Your pretty much stuck with what you've read. I would go with a third party cord on this. I dont usually recomend third party stuff as usually Canon gear is better quality, but come on, its a cord.
Users having problems with some of those cords have 580exII's on them. Thats alot of weight to support on a hotshoe. Your 420 is a lot more manageable and you shouldnt have too many problems.
A quick tutorial on how to use a Canon Speedlight, or any external flash for that matter. Go to shuttergeeklab.blogspot.com
The older version of this camera, the Canon S1IS had an automatic flash, that came up if there wasn't enough light. I have this camera in my hand, I have the booklet for it, and for the life of me I can't figure out how to make the flash work automatically. Is this a manual flash camera, that demands I raise it each time there is insufficient light?
No it does not.
The Canon S2 IS and the S3 IS have a flash that must be manually raised.
There are two manuals that came with the camera. The Advanced User Guide & the Basic User Guide (its a very thin booklet and you will find the flash info on page 11).
Hope that helps.

I have a Canon 50D, if that matters.
You have three options. The first and simplest option is simply an extension cable that would connect the flash to the hot shoe and costs about $70. The next option would be to buy an ST-E2 ($230) wireless flash controller or 580EXII ($450) flash from Canon that can control the 430EX-II via direct, line-of-sight, through infrared transmitters built into the ST-E2 and/or 580EXII. The third option would be a radio frequency transceiver set like the PocketWizard ($450 for two transceivers) but you'll need at least two tranceivers...One for the camera and one for your flash. Any of the three can work but the PocketWizard option gives you the greatest flexibility.
The flash is starting to annoy me because I've been taking photos of my dog and he blinks each time. It's my dad's camera and I'm not really sure what kind of model. The flash thing snaps up for a picture no matter what mode I select. How do you turn it off?
the big dial has a lightning bolt on it
press that and you will see a menu

2) I haven't tried that combination, but my guess is that it would probably work with camera and flash set to manual modes. The TTL features usually don't work when you mix brands. - thankyoumaskedman
3) Well, it should fit the hotshoe and would probably fire but wouldn't be ideal. Flashes are one accessory where I agree it is best to stay with your brand. - Gdffds
4) Yes it will but you won't have TTL capability so will have to set the flash power out put manually. - deep blue2
