Camera Tripod Canon

I need to get a tripod for both of the above Canon products but all the budget ones I've found don't have the capability to "pan" effectively. I'm looking to buy a tripod that will last but I can't afford too much money either.

A UK based store would be preferable

Manfrotto makes excellent lightweight and sturdy tripods. Don't get a cheap one, like Slik. The plastic parts break, and you don't want that to happen when your camera is on it.

My dad has a Canon 50D and needs a tripod. I would like to get him one for christmas but have no idea what I should be looking for. It needs to be a tall one not a table one that's all I know. If anyone could help me that would be great. We are in Australia so to be able to get it from here would also be helpful.

A good quality tripod is an investment. Here are just a few brands worth considering:

A tripod has to "fit" its user. If your dad is 6 feet tall and the tripod only extends to 5 feet then he'll quickly tire of having to stoop over to use it. Or, he'll have to extend the center column which is seldom a good idea.

The tripod must, of course, be capable of supporting the weight of the camera and lens and be sturdy enough that a slight breeze won't cause movement. Carbon fiber is the best material for minimizing vibrations and lowering the weight of the tripod but its rather expensive. Some manufacturers are offering a composite of aluminimum and carbon fiber which is less expensive and still capable of minimizing vibration.

Another consideration is the head. A tripod head can be a ball head or a 3-way titl/pan head. Since a large part of my photography is landscapes I use a 3-way tilt/pan head but a ball head has its advantages.

I need something that will support the cameras weight. Also I am going to be buying a larger lens at sometime in the future. So I would like a tripod that will hold the weight of a good size lens. Thank you.

I also own an XS. I have three tripods. I bought them all from Wal Mart. They're an aluminum alloy and are very sturdy but very light.

I use mine all the time. I also use a Tamron 18-200 lens and a Canon 75-300 - I've had no tripod problems yet - mine hold my cameras just fine.

Besides, these come with a carrying bag and they're usually around
$30 - can't beat that with a stick! :)
