I have a Canon S5 IS camera. I am not much into photography but still want to get better pictures. WOuld it be worth to purchase a Nikon D3000 or a Canon 1000D SLR camera. I mean how much better are they over Canon S5 IS.
If you're "not much into photography", why would you want to go to all that expense to get a DSLR? They cost a lot more money than you realize at first.
Yes, the quality is certainly better, but it would totally depend on YOU.
You can put a fantastic professional camera in the wrong hands, and it will take lousy photos. A good photographer can coax great photos out of even the simplest cameras.
If you don't put a lot of effort into learning about photography, a better camera will not miraculously give you better results.
Canon EOS 1000D (aka Rebel XS) DSLR review by Matt Golowczynski of What Digital Camera magazine
im thinking abt buying my first SLR camera. and learn on my own to use it. is it going to be easy to get the hang of it?
Do not worry. Most dSLRs have mode switches that offer full automatic, for the uninitiated, to full manual, for the absolute photo-maniac.
Shooting in full auto will allow you use the dSLR as if it were an ordinary point-and-shoot camera (without the LCD preview, at least for most dSLRs, I'm not sure with this model). For the pros and serious amateurs, full auto is like lazy mode. The camera decides everything for all the settings.
In between full auto and full manual, there are other modes for different scenes like sports, sunset, portrait, flower, scenic, etc. You only have to select the mode that closely resembles what you are about to take and shoot.
There are also semi-automatic modes like aperture priority and shutter-priority (and iso-priority?). These will be the most helpful to you if you want to learn photography. You basically select what you want to control and the camera will adjust the rest. If you study and remember what the camera does, you will eventually learn the relationship between shutter and aperture with respect to ISO and available light.
Experiment a lot. It's digital. You can take as much as you like and see the results in an instant. The camera will usually make safe decisions. More daring shots require you to change a setting or two. Good luck.

I am considering to buy Canon 1000D 18-55 mm with aditional objective 75-300mm or Olympus E 420 14-42 mm with another objective 40-150 mm. Those cameras are sold with 2 obectives. Please, would you advice which one is better. The difference in price is 100 euro. I am not a professional photographer. Thank you!
After reviewing them both i would go with the olympus camera but would recommend that you buy a better lens.
Or are it different cameras? I'm kinda confused. I believe it's the same but I'm not 100% sure.
They are all the same camera. Canon releases the same camera with a different name for different geographical regions.
Why? To slow the "gray market" trade.
What is the "gray market"? All camera manufacturers have authorized importers for different markets. These authorized importers then sell the cameras, lenses, etc. to re-sellers like Adorama or B&H or to dealers like your local camera shop or Wal-Mart or H.H. Gregg, etc. The authorized importer then pays fees to the manufactirer to support service centers, dealer training, etc.
However, it isn't illegal for you or I to buy cameras in, say, Singapore or Hong Kong and import them into our country. We can then sell them cheaper than sellers who bought from the authorized importer since we aren't paying out any money for service centers, etc. The consumer thinks he is getting a "deal" - until he needs service. If he's in the USA, no authorized service center for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, etc. will service the camera or lens or whatever it is - even if the consumer offers to pay. He is told to send the camera, lens, whatever, back to where it was originally purchased.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D Companion ...
I got a Digital SLR for Christmas and signed up for classes at the local community college. This was the best book by far of any one else in the class. Very well written. Very easy to understand. I still reference it when I have forgotten what settings I need. I also ordered another book and it is not nearly as good. Nice examples of the pictures you may want to try to capture.
The Canon EOS Rebel cameras are basically entry-level DSLR cameras. If this is your situation and you recently purchased a Rebel XS–known as the 1000D outside of the U.S.–you may want to get this book. This book is a beginner book that is specific to your camera. It’s a good book with which to start.
There are twelve chapters to this moderate sized book. The reader is given some very helpful screen shots of camera menus, as well as the displays that one will see through the viewfinder (i.e., the eyepiece) and on the LCD viewer screen. There are full-color images showing the camera with easy to understand text and lines pointing to exactly what to press or turn to set various things on the camera.
