I just bought a used Canon 10D Camera three weeks ago.
I'm shopping for a good wide angle or all round lens around $600. That my budget.
My photography is shooting people/fashion, cityscapes....more artistic photography.
But I'm not sure what lens are compatible with my 10D.
I would prefer Canon lenses.
But I will consider Tamron lenses too.
If there any other Canon 10D owners out there please I need help.
I'm at wits end on what lens to get.
Help!
According to Canons website, the 10D is compatible with all EF lenses. That is to say all autofocus lenses that are NOT EF-s, where as the EF-s or EFs lenses are for smaller digital mounts (later EOS models took the EF and EFs lenses).
In simple english, your camera will take all of Canon's 35mm autofocus film lenses just fine. As for the third party lenses you want to avoid "for digital mount" or "not for film".
I do not own a 10D and this camera may very well work with an EF-s lens, but from what I saw on the website it doesnt.
As for specific lenses my favorite for the money is the Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens. Its pretty sharp and is really good in low light due to the f/1.8.
A pretty good all around near and far lens is the Canon Zoom Normal-Telephoto EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 USM II Autofocus Lens. I do not own this one and cant make any comments on the quality of it.
And Sigma makes a 28-300mm lens.
All of these are under $300, you could get a few of them if you wanted.

My husband and I want to dabble in photography. We are beginners, but would still like to invest in a good camera [not just point-and-shoot].
A friend is willing to sell his Canon 10D, 6.3MP camera to us for $350. Is that a good deal, or would we be better off with a newer, 10-ish MP Canon Rebel?
Thanks!
Yes, a lens is included.
I believe it is a 30 - 100 mm.
The 10D is a good camera and for getting the camera and lens, if was taken care of $350.00 is a good deal. Some other digitals that were suggested as the XSi cost around $1000.00 and maybe not even include the lens so you might be spending more money for not that much more of a camera.
6.3 mega pixels are plenty to blow up and print to 11 X 14 but besides that, you say that you and your husband are wanting to dabble. Get the least expensive camera and see if it is really something you will enjoy and pursue. Later if you are still enthusiastic about photography, you can decide to upgrade. Then you will have a camera for each of you to use and enjoy at a minimal cost.
Photography is fun.
The 10D is all the camera you will need for beginners.
Thanks for reading.

The problem would be that the mirror would hit the back of the lens when it flipped up to get out of the way to take the shot. I have seen a discussion thread on http://photo.net/ where someone took a EF-s macro lens and put it on an extension tube (that took EF-s and EF lenses) and put that on a film camera and it worked because the extension tube moved the lens further away from the mirror. The person already had these things as the cost of it all was more than just buying a good EF macro lens.
Canon's website states that EF lenses will work. I wouldn't try just an EF-s lens by itself as you would damage the camera and lens both.
Any Speedlite series flashes will do the trick. I'd recommend the 420EX or (if finances will allow) the 580EX.
Thanks!

I have been blessed with a lot of opportunities to work in video and photography in such a short period of time with some of the best in the business in Tampa. But have you ever met that one person who tells you something that will stick with you the rest of your life?
When I was just starting out, I had a photography mentor that had a cameras ranging from old and obsolete, to brand new expensive, to different brands: Nikon, Canon, etc. LIke anyone else, I felt a little intimidated by his equipment and thought that one day, I could have the same equipment and do the same things he did. I always here people say that I have an XL2 but I don’t shoot HD, or I have a Sony something or other but have never shot with a Nikon. It’s all BS.
He told me that, “The only purpose of a camera is to get to the next frame.”
And after he told me that, no camera became off limits, it finally all made sense. From still cameras like the Canon 10D to a Nikon D3, to video cameras like Canon XL2’s to Panasonic 900’s to a Red, they all do the same thing. It was so freeing. If you understand this conceptually, then you can pick up any camera and use it effectively. Granted they all have different gizmos and whiz bangs to make them unique, but it just makes sense. Well to me anyway.
