Hi im wanting a camera for taking photographs of scenery in cumbria lake districts.
I'm new to it all. Is the Canon EOS 20D Digital SLR a good camera for this? I can get the body for £180.
Also what lens would I need for good photos of scenery/mountains etc. thanks.!
It's old, but definitely still potent. I'd rather have a 20D than any of the modern digital rebel/xxxD/xxD series. The 20D is in Canon's line of semi-professional cameras, and therefore brings you a great deal more useablility with it's robust alloy chassis, 5fps continuous drive, pentaprism viewfinder, secondary control wheel, and greater selection of custom functions including all important second curtain sync with onboard flash,
Originally the 20D usually is kitted with Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 II which wasn't particularly spectacular lens. It isn't easy to operate, and wasn't particularly sharp and rather prone to vignetting and fringing was inconsistent.
Therefore it's best to buy the camera body only and team it with the Canon 17-40mm f4L or a 24-105mm f4L IS both are formidable lenses from Canon's L-series. Canon's EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS is also a decent lens, but isn't anywhere near as strong as the L's.
You could also consider either the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6, Canon's EF-S 10-22, and Tokina 11-16mm lenses if you want extreme wide angle.
Also you may want a lens to pick a small bit of the environment out, and for that the 70-200mm f4L would do that job justice.
All of the lenses I've mentioned have distance scales, which are important to landscape photography, this allows you to focus on the hyperfocal point (you'll want to print out a hyperfocal chart from the internet) which maximises the area of the image that is acceptably focused.
Furthermore you should spend some money on a decent high quality tripod, capable of supporting around 5kg.

It has a flash lever prob though but I prob can getit fixed
It's a 3 year old model camera. It's second hand and with anything second hand you're taking a risk.
You can buy a 30D for only a few hundred dollars more or you can even buy a brand new Nikon D40 for less...

I've had the 10D recommended repeatedly but I see it is no longer available. The 20D runs $2000 with lens. I'd like to spend $800-$1100.
Can someone recommend an alternative to the 20D in that price range?
Thanks
Now I'm confused; This camera is almost $2000:

What on earth are you talking about?, the 20D was discontinued years ago and sells on eBay for about $500 or less!! (where on earth did you get the idea they are $2000??)
The alternative for your price range is the Canon 40D

Do not bother with the 10D, lovely cameras but difficult to find one these days with a low shutter count and they are incompatible with EF-S lenses.

Additional: That must be mistake, the price is completely wrong. I also notice that it is not Amazons price, it is 'Wall Street Photo's' price, selling through Amazon. You can buy a 50D and 70-200mm f/4 L lens for that price. Forget about the 20D completely, it is either a typo or they are trying to rip somebody off. look at the 40D or the 50D, the price the 40D is going for now is excellent, check out B&H for better prices (and 100% trustworthy)

My friends asked my to choose from two digital camera models (New Canon 350D or Old Canon 20D) and tell him to buy one of them. I suggest that he can buy Canon Rebel XT 350D because it is cheaper and lighter than Canon 20D. I am not sure if I told him the truth depending on only two factors. The price and the weight. If you would be in my shoes, which one would you advice your friend and why?
The 20D has been replaced by the 30D, but even the most ardent Canonites agree that the changes didn't justify a new model number. The 30D has a slightly larger back screen and 1 or 2 other minute changes. It's not faster or better in any way however, and nothing has changed with regard to the sensor or image quality.
The 20D was, and still is a major step up from the 350D.
If your friend is a serious photographer, he'll appreciate the extra features of the 20D. The 20D also has a much better build quality, and the shutter is rated to last twice as long as that of the 350D. The extra price is entirely justified.
Also, I don't believe that the extra weight is a point against the 20D. I personally feel that the 350D is too small and light!
I personally shoot a Nikon D200, so I guess I'm biased towards the more advanced of the 2 models you're considering.
I was looking at an ad and a guy was selling a Canon 20D pro Digital SLR w/Lens but he said that the flash shoe was bent. Would this camera be sufficent and also will the fact the the flash shoe affect the outcome of the pictures??
Depends on the size of the posters. Generally, anything that size and you start needing really high resolution like medium format or large format film cameras.
Potentially, you might be able to get away with a Canon 1Ds Mark III(24MP), but really it all depends on the size of the poster. You could do some limited upsizing of the digital files.
I'd say a DSLR will get you a nice 20x30 size print, once you want to go over that, maybe some upsizing, but really...anything bigger than that and I'd say that start looking at medium format film cameras.
Also, when doing something that large, you need to nail the exposure and the focus.
