Canon 40d Digital Camera

I've got an older 35 mm Canon EOS SLR. I'm seeing a lot of the 28-135mm zoom lenses on sale that come with the Canon 40D digital cameras. Can I use that lens on my film camera?

You sure can. All EF lenses can be used on both film and digital Canon cameras. The only lenses that your film camera can not use are the EFs lenses these are designed specifically for the cropped sensors on DSLR cameras. For instance many DSLR cameras come with a EFs 18-55mm lens. This would be the equivalent to the EF 28-90mm lens that comes with many film cameras.

The reason why Canon produces these EFs lenses is that because of the cropped sensor (smaller than 35mm film) the field of view is magnified by 1.6

This is great for a telephoto lens. Your 200 mm lens becomes a 320mm lens. On the wide angle end you lose out. This is why Canon has lenses like the EFs 18-55 mm and the EFs 10-22mm.

Bottom line make sure it is an EF lens and not an EFs lens and you will have no problems.

To clarify what David mentioned, he is talking about the DIGITAL Rebel cameras, not the 35mm one that you have.

Yes, the 40D will accept all Canon EOS EF and EF-S mount lenses.

If you get an EF-S lens, it will work on the 40D. However, the EF-S lenses will NOT work on your 35mm film camera.

What brand of Macro lens would be suggested to get for my Canon 40d digital camera? Would prefer one that would take a clear, non distorted photo but yet not be super super super expensive. --- --- --- ((Not looking for a zoom lens really, already have a 28-135 zoom lens, but I can not stand close enough to the subjects to actually get a good/close macro shot of them with that zoom lens.))

Your 40D deserves a quality lens and one of THE best Macro lenses available...is the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro. It costs less than $500 US (that's not super super expensive, is it?).
But, it doesn't have "o.k. quality". In fact, it has excellent image quality and sharpness! And, it also make a great portrait lens.

Your question tells us that you may not be ready for such an advanced camera.

If you mean by "photography looking pictures" the kind of images produced by a professional camera,, then yes.

Before spending a lot of money on a professional quality camera and lens, look in to taking at least one photo class.

I would hate to see you spend over $1000 for camera that would be a point and shoot camera in your hands.
