im thinking abt buying my first SLR camera. and learn on my own to use it. is it going to be easy to get the hang of it?
Do not worry. Most dSLRs have mode switches that offer full automatic, for the uninitiated, to full manual, for the absolute photo-maniac.
Shooting in full auto will allow you use the dSLR as if it were an ordinary point-and-shoot camera (without the LCD preview, at least for most dSLRs, I'm not sure with this model). For the pros and serious amateurs, full auto is like lazy mode. The camera decides everything for all the settings.
In between full auto and full manual, there are other modes for different scenes like sports, sunset, portrait, flower, scenic, etc. You only have to select the mode that closely resembles what you are about to take and shoot.
There are also semi-automatic modes like aperture priority and shutter-priority (and iso-priority?). These will be the most helpful to you if you want to learn photography. You basically select what you want to control and the camera will adjust the rest. If you study and remember what the camera does, you will eventually learn the relationship between shutter and aperture with respect to ISO and available light.
Experiment a lot. It's digital. You can take as much as you like and see the results in an instant. The camera will usually make safe decisions. More daring shots require you to change a setting or two. Good luck.
Canon EOS 1000D (aka Rebel XS) DSLR review by Matt Golowczynski of What Digital Camera magazine
Or are it different cameras? I'm kinda confused. I believe it's the same but I'm not 100% sure.
They are all the same camera. Canon releases the same camera with a different name for different geographical regions.
Why? To slow the "gray market" trade.
What is the "gray market"? All camera manufacturers have authorized importers for different markets. These authorized importers then sell the cameras, lenses, etc. to re-sellers like Adorama or B&H or to dealers like your local camera shop or Wal-Mart or H.H. Gregg, etc. The authorized importer then pays fees to the manufactirer to support service centers, dealer training, etc.
However, it isn't illegal for you or I to buy cameras in, say, Singapore or Hong Kong and import them into our country. We can then sell them cheaper than sellers who bought from the authorized importer since we aren't paying out any money for service centers, etc. The consumer thinks he is getting a "deal" - until he needs service. If he's in the USA, no authorized service center for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, etc. will service the camera or lens or whatever it is - even if the consumer offers to pay. He is told to send the camera, lens, whatever, back to where it was originally purchased.

Title more or less explains, bought a EOS 1000D camera and there isnt an image coming up on the LCD monitor. WHY!?!?!?!? Please post quickly :) :) thanks :)
Sorry, it does show the setting and such, like, it will say which type of photo it will take, there just isnt a preview of the photo your about to take on the lcd screen.
Your camera is a dSLR camera and you're actually meant to use the viewfinder to compose your shots...and not the LCD screen like compact cameras do.
However, the 1000D does have Live View Shooting. But, you cannot use it while shooting in the Basic Zone modes (Auto, etc).
So, you need to go get your Instruction Manual and turn to pages 95-106 to read all about Live View Shooting.
BUT, when using Live View Shooting you will need to ALWAYS mount your camera on a tripod because you cannot handhold the camera still enough and your images will be blurred. That's why Live View shooting is best used for still life shots while the camera is mounted on a tripod.
So, if I were you, I would get used to using the viewfinder because it really is the easiest, most practical and best way to shoot...

I'm thinking about buying this camera. I've read favourable reviews, handled it in store and liked it and the price is good. What do you think?
From what the two above me wrote they've just been reading about the 1000D where as I actually own one. I highly recommend this camera. Nikon owners like their Nikons, I happen to be a Canon guy and enjoy my 1000D.
With any SLR it's important to outfit it with the right lens(s). Optics, optics, optics are very important to any camera's performance. I've found that my Canon 28-200 does a superb job of giving me very sharp, quick focus, like this. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimsphotost uff/4615829643/sizes/l/
Look closely at his eyes, you'll see what I mean by sharp.
Any way, Canon, Nikon it's what you really prefer that matters. Me it's Canon.
I would quite like a sturdy case prefferably able to fit another lens in (18-55 ) and that would suitable for me to take skiing( only to take pics of friends jumping). Thanks
lowerpro slingshot 100 aw. will protect your camera properly as well as providing some extra space, also you can access equipment easily with the bag still round your back.
i dont think its expensive

Difference Between Canon EOS 1000D and Nikon D60 | Difference Between
Canon EOS 1000D vs Nikon D60
Near the bottom of the entry level DSLR market, one will find the Canon EOS 1000D and the D60 from Nikon. These are entry level cameras that are aimed towards hobbyists and amateur photographers. At first glance, one can be hard pressed to find differences between the two cameras as they are very similar to each other down to their weight. With closer inspection of the specifications, one would find that each camera does not have the same type of sensor. The 1000D has a 10 megapixel CCD sensor while D60 has a 10 megapixel CMOS sensor.
Although the resolutions are the same, the type of sensor can affect the quality of the image one ends up with. CCD and CMOS sensors take virtually identical images at low ISO settings but at high ISO settings, CCD sensors can suffer from an effect called blooming. Due to its advantages, CMOS sensors are commonly found on high end DSLRs while a lot of point and shoot cameras have CCD sensors.
