Canon Eos 1ds Mark Ii Digital Camera

My sister is an expert in astrophotography and we want to get her a camera for her birthday. We want to get her a SLR we just cant decide which one would suit her needs in photographing deep space objects.

I think the 5D M2 would be a good choice of camera.
I suggest you check to see what make and model of camera she currently uses just so you will have an idea of the equipment she has.
Then see if you camera choice will fit with the current equipment she already has.
If this is not a big problem and you just want to get her a new camera and a good lens, that is also a good choice.

What does the "1V Next" mean?

Please elaborate. I can only find the term "1V Next" on eBay.
The 1Ds Mark 2 is Canon's top of the line digital SLR for resolution. It offers 16.7 mega-pixels and 4 frames per second.
The 1V is/ was Canon's top of the line 35mm film camera for speed. It reached a whopping 10 FPS! The digital reincarnation of this model is the 1D Mark 2 N. This digital models offers less resolution than the 1Ds Mk 2, but it gives you 8.5 FPS.
The 1Ds Mk2 and the 1D Mk2 N are both current models.
Nikon used to have two pro models too - one for resolution and one for speed - but they came together a few years ago in the D2X. The D2X can either do high res, or at the flick of a switch it goes to low res with high-speed.

I don't own a digital SLR camera yet and I was thinking about these two. I already have a variety of lens for the Canon EOS system. I currently shoot about 40% sports, 30% news and 30% art.

Isn't this one of those questions where they say, "If you have to ask..."

I'd get the 1Ds Mark II. It has the full format sensor and 16 freakin' megapixels. This will come a lot closer to your film experience than the Mark III with its smaller sensor and 10 MP.

This is a gift from the entire family for my sister, that's why I am asking the informed indivuduals here.

Each one costs so much - if she doesn't like it, that's a lot of money spent (and feelings hurt if she returns it for something else). Go with her if you must to the camera store--or just ask her what she really wants.
