Reviews on: Canon EOS 20D Digital SLR Camera?

Hi im wanting a camera for taking photographs of scenery in cumbria lake districts.
I'm new to it all. Is the Canon EOS 20D Digital SLR a good camera for this? I can get the body for £180.

Also what lens would I need for good photos of scenery/mountains etc. thanks.!

It's old, but definitely still potent. I'd rather have a 20D than any of the modern digital rebel/xxxD/xxD series. The 20D is in Canon's line of semi-professional cameras, and therefore brings you a great deal more useablility with it's robust alloy chassis, 5fps continuous drive, pentaprism viewfinder, secondary control wheel, and greater selection of custom functions including all important second curtain sync with onboard flash,

Originally the 20D usually is kitted with Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 II which wasn't particularly spectacular lens. It isn't easy to operate, and wasn't particularly sharp and rather prone to vignetting and fringing was inconsistent.

Therefore it's best to buy the camera body only and team it with the Canon 17-40mm f4L or a 24-105mm f4L IS both are formidable lenses from Canon's L-series. Canon's EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS is also a decent lens, but isn't anywhere near as strong as the L's.

You could also consider either the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6, Canon's EF-S 10-22, and Tokina 11-16mm lenses if you want extreme wide angle.

Also you may want a lens to pick a small bit of the environment out, and for that the 70-200mm f4L would do that job justice.

All of the lenses I've mentioned have distance scales, which are important to landscape photography, this allows you to focus on the hyperfocal point (you'll want to print out a hyperfocal chart from the internet) which maximises the area of the image that is acceptably focused.

Furthermore you should spend some money on a decent high quality tripod, capable of supporting around 5kg.

It has a flash lever prob though but I prob can getit fixed

It's a 3 year old model camera. It's second hand and with anything second hand you're taking a risk.
You can buy a 30D for only a few hundred dollars more or you can even buy a brand new Nikon D40 for less...

What is the cheaper alternative to the Canon EOS 20D SLR Digital Camera?

I've had the 10D recommended repeatedly but I see it is no longer available. The 20D runs $2000 with lens. I'd like to spend $800-$1100.
Can someone recommend an alternative to the 20D in that price range?

Thanks
Now I'm confused; This camera is almost $2000:

What on earth are you talking about?, the 20D was discontinued years ago and sells on eBay for about $500 or less!! (where on earth did you get the idea they are $2000??)

The alternative for your price range is the Canon 40D

Do not bother with the 10D, lovely cameras but difficult to find one these days with a low shutter count and they are incompatible with EF-S lenses.

Additional: That must be mistake, the price is completely wrong. I also notice that it is not Amazons price, it is 'Wall Street Photo's' price, selling through Amazon. You can buy a 50D and 70-200mm f/4 L lens for that price. Forget about the 20D completely, it is either a typo or they are trying to rip somebody off. look at the 40D or the 50D, the price the 40D is going for now is excellent, check out B&H for better prices (and 100% trustworthy)

Digital camera wide angle lenses Canon EOS 20D?

Looking for a digital specific wide angle lens ,reasonable quality, cheap price. At the moment I am using my old slr film lenses and of course digital magnifies the lenses by 1.5 this is okay with my 300mm lens making it a 450mm but my 28 has become a 42mm .I would really like something like an 18mm.
Cheers D

It took me a while to figure this out so I'll clear it up for you: the 1.6x magnifier will be there no matter what. Even lenses that are made for digital (i.e. the EFS lenses) will be subject to the magnifier. So if the EFS lenses are subject to the magnifier, what's their point? The point is that they only have to cover a smaller sensor. That means lenses can be built lighter, smaller and cheaper. Despite covering a smaller sensor, THEY ARE STILL SUBJECT TO THE MAGNIFICATION. Therefore if you want wide angle you'll have to get something like a 10mm lens and accept the fact that it's going to be an effective 16mm. If that's not acceptable to you you'll need to get a full frame camera.

I have a Minolta X-700, a film Canon EOS3 and a digital Canon EOS 20D, which one should I keep?

I already have a little digital camera, but I am hesitant as to which SLR I want to keep. Ideally I would keep only one. So what it boils down to is: Will I get better pictures on my professional EOS3 film camera, or on my 6 years old, 8mpixels EOS 20D?

Keep your film your camera. Your're digital camera would be useless in a short while.
