Can a Canon EOS SLR film camera use Canon digital SLR lenses?

I've got an older 35 mm Canon EOS SLR. I'm seeing a lot of the 28-135mm zoom lenses on sale that come with the Canon 40D digital cameras. Can I use that lens on my film camera?


You sure can. All EF lenses can be used on both film and digital Canon cameras. The only lenses that your film camera can not use are the EFs lenses these are designed specifically for the cropped sensors on DSLR cameras. For instance many DSLR cameras come with a EFs 18-55mm lens. This would be the equivalent to the EF 28-90mm lens that comes with many film cameras.

The reason why Canon produces these EFs lenses is that because of the cropped sensor (smaller than 35mm film) the field of view is magnified by 1.6

This is great for a telephoto lens. Your 200 mm lens becomes a 320mm lens. On the wide angle end you lose out. This is why Canon has lenses like the EFs 18-55 mm and the EFs 10-22mm.

Bottom line make sure it is an EF lens and not an EFs lens and you will have no problems.

What lens would you recommend for the Canon EOS 40D to be used for Landscape/Fall Foliage...?

I'm not new to digital cameras, but I am new to DSLRs with interchangeable lenses. I have the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens, but I am looking for other lens options (for travel photos, fall foliage shots, etc). I would like to pick up a larger zoom and maybe a wide angle lens, but I was wondering what other people use for their main (most used) lens for outdoor shots?


I use two lenses with Canon 20D.
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilized lens.
With Canon 40D it would work as 27 - 135mm (Canon bodies have crop factor 1.6).
It covers from wide angle to low telephoto (135mm). Very convenient for travel and outdoor.
However, this lens will overlap your lens (45 - 216mm with 1.6 crop factor).

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilized lens.
With Canon 40D it would work as 112 - 480mm.

So, this combination covers pretty wide range (from 28 to 480mm), which is very convenient for travel, outdoor, landscape and other situations.
My main lens (80% of time) is 17-85mm.


Your lens (28 - 135mm) with Canon 40D would work as 45 - 215mm.
If you want to extend to wide angle side, check Canon EF 18-55mm (27-85mm with Canon 40D).
It’s not expansive lens (~$140) wouldn’t dramatically overlap your current lens.
For telephoto option you could try Canon 100-400mm (160 - 640mm with Canon 40D).
It’s pretty expansive however.

Suggestion: try as much as possible you current lens. It would help you better understand what do you want. It’s September, and for fall foliage your lens is almost perfect.

    I have a canon xt and ready to up grade to a newer model all the reviews make it difficult to chose between the canon 40D and the 50D or maybe some other canon 1D mark 111 price is an issue but quality and clear pictures are equally important. I do most of my shooting in doors and action shoots I have a 70 to 200 2.8L IS USM lens I use on my XT and would like recommendation on which body to up grade to and what benefits I will see. I also would need a wide angle leCanon EOS 50D 15.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lensns of some sort preferably an IS, any suggestions.
