I want to take a close up picture... help?

I have a Contax G2 35mm camera, with 28, 35, 45, and 90mm lenses.

I want to take a really close-up shot of some pill bottles for a school project, but I don't want to take any pictures until I know how I should set the aperture/shutter speed to make the pictures turn out... any help?

Which size lens should I use? Aperture size? Shutter speed?

It will be in my bathroom, with overhead artificial lighting (four 30 watt lightbulbs), and a mirror directly behind...
Sorry I didn't make it more detailed...

My camera is a viewfinder, not SLR, so focusing manually is not really ideal. The camera has the capacity to do so, but I am not familiar with it and I don't want to do something without knowing it will work.

I will be using ISO 100 B&W film, as required for the class. Both answers sound good so far, but I really don't have a lot of money to spend on diopters and new lenses (estimate on prices???) right now, and the project is due next Wednesday.

Feel free to message me on AIM, I should be on all weekend. I would really appreciate the help, thanks for the answers.

Unless you (or your teacher if this is an assignment) are OK with soft-focus photos, I would recommend not using diopter filters, and definitely would recommend not stacking them. Stacked diopter filters can be good for using alone as a soft-focus portrait lens, but you can't get a sharp photo with stacked diopters no matter what you do. I have done comparison photos with both diopters and extension tubes and the difference in sharpness leaps out at you.

I would recommend a set of extension tubes. The great things about extension tubes are that you can use them with all your lenses and they have no glass and so don't reduce the sharpness of your photos.

Try doing the photos at several different f/stops so you can chose the one which has the depth of field you like best. This is sort of like bracketing exposure, except you are bracketing depth of field.

A short focal length lens such as the 24mm will give you distortion when shooting close up, which can give interesting effects. Try some shots with several lenses such as the 24, the 45, and the 90, and go with the photos you like best.

List of the Best Cameras - Whatcha Think?

From reading reviews over the past couple of months, these are what seem to be the best cameras to buy right now. What would your list look like?

Best 35mm Point-N-Shoot: Contax T3 (expensive)
Best for the Price: Olympus Stylus Epic

Best Entry-level 35mm SLR: Don't know

Best Compact Digital Point-N-Shoot: Canon A620, Fujifilm F30

Best Entry-level DSLR: Nikon D80 (expensive)
Best for the Price: Canon EOS Rebel XT350

Best for the Price and BEST entry-level 35mm SLR: Nikon N80 (which can be set on auto-focus, and on "P" or full-auto mode and will work like a point-and-shoot camera, can be used totally on manual mode with auto-focus or manual focus, semi automatic on aperture priority or shutter speed priority, advances film as you take a photo and will rewind after your last image, sets the ISO automatically for you, also has 3 great light metering modes and great on-demand features, such as on demand grid-lines to help you keep the horizon level in landscape or seascape photography; built ergonomically and is solid, and is a poor man's pro-camera; most popular consumer camera ever made by Nikon).

Best entry-level DSLR: D50 (see: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d50.htm )

Best lens for the money and most versatile lens: Nikkor AF 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6D (or the older version, just as good but cheaper: Nikkor AF 35-105mm f/3.5-5.6D-macro)

BEST for price DSLR: Nikon D80 (not expensive but rugged and far more options and far better built and worth every cent).

Best lens for the Nikon D80: the kit lens that comes with it or you can use the Nikkor AF 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6D OR the Nikkor AF 35-105mm f/f3.5-5.6D-macro.

Don't compare an orange with a possible lemon! Yes, the Rebel ST350 is cheaper but just hold it one hand and also hold the Nikon D80 in your other hand BEFORE you decide! If the ergonomics ain't enough to convince you, then the ruggedness and the no-nonsense feel will convince you!

For the N80 and the lenses, check with www.keh.com and see for yourself! Good luck and best wishes.

camera experts, what's so special about...?

...what's so special about the contax t3. it's a 35mm point and shoot but it's really expensive. is it really worth the price? is there any other camera that is similar in function and more affordable?

I would have to say that camera isnt what your paying for. I have my work camera (A Nikon) and then I have this camera http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital _cameras/z/finepix_z10fd/index.html it is a Fujifilm Pinepix Z10 for about $150. I would reccomend this camera as a Professional Photographer. It is a point and shoot, and a very nice camera for the price. It is 7.2 mp and very small. Big LCD and very easy to understand. Any questions? Ask me!

What's the least threatening-looking camera?

I want to follow in the footsteps of H. Cartier-Bresson and capture The Decisive Moment.

Seems to me I'll be more likely to accomplish this if I don't use a camera that looks like a bazooka!

I know HC-B used a Leica but they're a bit spendy for me.

I've assembled a list of affordable cameras that I hope won't scare the bejeezus out of the locals.

The only criteria? Must be 35mm *film* and have swappable lenses.

Which would you choose? Or none of the above?

1. Voigtlander Bessa R3A ... grey
2. Nikon F80 ... black (can't find a silver one)
3. Oly OM-2 ... chrome
4. Minolta CL/CLE
5. Contax G-2

TIA for your help!

Nah, go for a box brownie ! They'll never see it coming.. snicker snicker.

The LX is not in mint contion as the lenses, but still very good. It's smaller and lighter then my FM3A, the view is bigger and brighter then any cameras I have used. You will not disspointed with it. It's in perfect working order as well. The 50 1.7 pentax is an A version(latest manual version). Cosmetically very good, close to mint, but the aperture ring is a little bit too tight. This does not effect any use. The LX is not in mint contion as the lenses, but still very good.
