I'm by no means a professional photographer --I know next to nothing about the technical aspects of photography --but I know enough to be disgusted with the pictures the lower-end digital cameras get. I'll be using my camera mainly around the house --we're talking a lot of family pictures and portraits, with occasional outdoor use. I'd like a camera that lets me take a lot of pictures, and quickly. Size and weight isn't so important --quality is. I was pretty happy with the Canon PowerShot A75 I had till now, but now that it's broken, I'm thinking of upgrading. I do want a camera that'll let me take pictures that look professional --does close-ups nicely, handles light nicely, etc, and one that does give me more control over shutter speed, etc.
I'd like a camera that'll work for someone like me --I don't know that much about the technical aspects of photography, but would like to learn more. I need a camera with a good continous shooting mode as well as a decent video function and one that takes good portrait shots, and prefer that it have the ability to take action shots. (I'll be taking pictures of kids.) I want a camera that is user-friendly enough for me to be able to use it now, yet will still allow me control over the advanced settings as I learn. Despite my limited knowledge, I know enough to appreciate good photography when I see it. Good white balance, accurate colors and light, etc, are all important. The camera should be able to handle pics from all tyoes of angles without distortion. The Canon A640, Canon 710 IS, Canon Powershot S3 IS and the Fuji FinePix A710 IS were all recommended. Thoughts?

Think Bahamas but not. lol I'm not too familiar with Florida. I've been to Orlando and Cocoa Beach. I did not like Cocoa Beach. We originally wanted to go to the Bahamas to get married, but some of my family cannot do the trip. We want to stay at a resort that isn't overcrowded with children...I love them, but I want it to be romantic, and less children the better. I am also looking for locations that have clear water, white sand, waves, and of course...tons of activities.
If any of you have suggestions for resorts that you've been married at or not, please, we need all the help we can get. I only expect at most 15-20 guests, but I want the cost to stay at a minimum. I'm also looking for a place that supplies a good photographer, as photography is an obsession of mine.
Our budget will probably be about $5-7,000. And the wedding won't be for another year, or year and a half.
I was in Florida in April and I stayed in Sanibel Island. It is on the Gulf Coast, near Fort Myers and about 3 hours south of Tampa. I stayed at the Sanibel Inn. It was wonderful. I am not sure if they have wedding specials or not, but I am sure if you ask they can probably give you some info. Check out the websites. Let me know if I can help you with any other questions about the area if that is one of you options. I also have some pictures of the area, if your interested.

If you're in the Los Angeles area and looking for a good affordable photographer... call him, he is good, he will make sure you're satisfied with your pictures as well as he is.
What do you guys think of his photos?

I enjoy digital photography as both a hobby and for taking family photos. I have only ever used a point and shoot camera (currently have a Canon Powershot SD450), but would like to be able to have more freedom in how I shoot and ultimately take better photos. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of money to spend on a fancy new camera. Is there something affordable that I could buy that would take great photos? (and yes, I know that my skill as a photographer is equally or more important than the camera ... right now I am just interested in answers regarding equipment). Thanks!
I know it's not much, but I can't really afford to spend more than $300.
I also agree on the Nikon D40, read this http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommen ded-cameras.htm
then all you need to do is save up for lenses bc in the end, the body is less important.
My ultimate dream is to leave the south and go to New York, where I have family and start a career in the arts.
Money, however, IS a serious issue, and the most practical thing would be for me to go to school here. It's so far the only affordable way for my situation.
So, I was wondering if anyone knew of photography programs that offer bachelor degrees in Mississippi or Louisiana. I've used bridges.com and theprincetonreview.com for help, but not so much luck. I suppose art degrees are not priority in the south. Thanks in advance. :)
I've went to both Louisiana Tech and LSU in New Orleans and know that they have a Liberal Arts degree in photography. I don't know how good the programs are, though. I have a link that lists colleges in Louisiana and Mississippi (under the heading More Louisiana Colleges and More Mississippi Colleges). They also have links to the community colleges that are here.
I'm sorry I couldn't be more help. I hope you find what you need.
'Died Young, Stayed Pretty,' about rock poster artists, loses focus
Although "Died Young, Stayed Pretty," a documentary about the underground rock poster movement, begins with a freewheeling array of diverting poster graphics and provocative artist interviews, it soon becomes apparent that there's no real structure or point of view to it all. In fact, by the movie's frustrating second half, it's almost as if director Eileen Yaghoobian (who also produced, shot and edited) decided to become as anarchic as the art she features here and just cut together her remaining footage willy-nilly, viewer engagement be damned.
The indie-rock poster subculture, at least as seen here, seems so largely populated by tunnel-visioned white guys living in a kind of low-paid, artistic exile, that, without digging beneath their offbeat surfaces (which Yaghoobian doesn't), they simply become tiresome mouthpieces. In addition, the fact that the wildly imaginative posters these iconoclasts produce have so little impact nowadays (the same is unfortunately true of the obscure
