David Elliott on movies: 'Wild Things,' 'Law Abiding,' 'New York'

“Where the Wild Things Are”

Spike Jonze’s best adult works, “Adaptation” and “Being John Malkovich,” were so playful that his choosing to film Maurice Sendak’s childhood fantasy classic “Where the Wild Things Are” was not surprising. What surprises is how far Jonze (adapting with Dave Eggers the picture book of very few words), has gotten back to the alphabet blocks of imagination, using a big budget (over $80 million) to achieve the force of a tale not simply young but Jungian.

The hero, Max, runs away from home after feeling that his mischievous, taxing vitality has been rejected by his harried mother and older sister. His turmoil conjures up a little boat that takes him across a sea to a desert island, where the wild creatures are his fears projected and only slightly tamed. They loom above him, like adults whose emotions (like many human grown-ups) remain childish. Scared but resourceful, Max is named their king despite wearing rabbit pajamas, and leads them into games including a fairly ruthless fight with clods of dirt. These often loveable animals have eaten past kings.

Want to meet the most expressive child on the planet? I can’t even reference how many times she’s appeared on my blog as she’s grown, but she belongs to my brother and his beautiful wife. She loves “flying Goggies” (birds), will openly tell you “I’m ado-able” (adorable), and she has the sass and fire in her of my Irish Grandmother. She’s also the sweetest, most kissable child on earth and I want to squeeze her just looking at these photos.

My brother and I are only 18 months apart and have shared friends, survived hardships, and enjoyed plastering our parents walls with mandarin oranges, soggy Shreddies, grape Tomatos and other squishy foods together over the years. He also once let me change a tire in basketball shorts and flip flops in a snow storm while he braved the cold inside the nice warm car. But I won’t tell you about that (we were only 16).   In all seriousness though, he is an amazing brother and has always been there for me. He’s a fabulous example, a wonderful father and an incredible husband to his amazing wife. I love him & his family more than anything!
