I mainly just photograph my toddler and currently have the 18-200MM but am wanting something more specific to photographing children and families. I will be shooting outdoors as well as in my home. Thank you for your advice.
I am also thinking about starting a side job as photographing children/families. Right now it is just my hobby. Should I go for the 50mm/1.4 or the 24-70/L lens 2.8? Both seemed great for portraits.
I read about both lens along with the others on BHPhoto so I narrowed it down to the two and both seem to have great reviews.
Those are some great suggestions. I've found the 24-70 to not only be great for family pictures but a variety of other things as well. Here's a review:

Starting up a small child/family portrait photography business and need a name. Something sweet and elegant but not too cheesy. Thoughts?
"The Memory of a lifetime"
Looking for simple grass roots ways to promote my small photography business. Would like to do some type of event where they could bring their children, family, pets, etc. to be photographed. Any other promotion ideas? Any good experiences?
A couple of ideas - (1) Get hold of the local Humane Society and see if they would be interested in doing some sort of fund raiser where people could come and have their pictures taken with their pets for a small donation to the Humane Society (from which you would get a cut or just do it for publicity and hand out your card).
(2) I know a guy who did a cool thing just as a hobby and ended up with a second business. Go to your local Little League or Soccer or Football games and take action shots of the kids and hand out your card with the information of where the parents can see the pictures. This guy set up a website where the parents can log on and see the pictures and then can order some if they want to. He has it protected from anyone being able to just print the pictures from there (I don't know how you do that but it is worth checking into). Anyway, parents love to see pictures of their star athletes in action and will order copies to send to grandparents, etc. He has even been hired now by different teams to do team pictures and/or to take pictures of certain games. It has turned out great for him.
I have done some portrait photography...children, family ect. Don't have any lights yet, so I was thinking of buying a couple inexpensive lights with umbrellas....should I get the strobe lights or continuous lighting?
Get the strobe, more power, more depth of field for you. Don't go cheap, they will only frustrate you. There is no place to repair them or replace bulbs. Buy an Alien Bee and get more as you have the cash. One Bee umbrellaed and one bounced on camera strobe can be a wonderful start.

PINKLE TOES PHOTOGRAPHY: PINKLE TOES PHOTOGRAPHY: Austin Family ...

By far, my absolute fav session with one of my absolute fav families!

And now, a bunch of sneaky peeks for all of those beautiful families that braved the intense fog and even RAIN today for our Xpressions sessions (as always, the images below from the Xpressions sessions have not been retouched):
(I’d especially like to thank Miss J with the umbrella above…she did an INCREDIBLE job fighting the elements today!)
There is still ONE opening left for the November 22nd, round of Xpressions (again, this is the LAST round I’ll be doing in Austin for 2009). Contact me if you want to snag it!
