Wanting to go to photography school?
Morice

I'm a single mom of 2. I'm 25. I don't recieve welfare & I work full time. I have finally decided to go to school for photography. I'm a photographer & manager for a studio (JCPenney) I have a great talent & I love what I do.. the school I want to go to is the New England School of Photography in Boston. It's a 2 yr cert. program & tutition is $17,000 yr. I have applied for federal grants & stafford loan. I have been approved for $11,000 in total. The problem is I still need to make up the difference + I still need supplies camera, film, paper, laptop etc... ($7,500) Plus a monthly T pass for the train @ $223.
As a single mom I don't have this kind of money. I don't have the best credit as well and any kind of loan would need a co-signer. I don't have any family that can sign for me & I'm feeling that my dreams are starting to fall apart. I don't know what else I can do. If anyone has suggestions I will listen....
Thank you

A degree always looks good on a resume when applying for jobs, but consider this. A lot of the really great photographers never went to photo school-- Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Annie Leibowitz. They were self-taught. I am also primarily self-taught. I'm in some photo classes at my local junior college. It just so happens that they have a really good program and the state of Florida pays for most of my costs except for cameras and supplies of course. I considered for a long time whether taking classes would be worth my time or not. I've learned a lot, sure. But most of the basics I learned from reading and experimenting a whole lot. I started shooting weddings and portraits before I even went to school.

I guess it depends on what you want to do as a photographer. You have to decide whether the investment of going to school is the best route to break into being a professional. I was reading an article in Photo District News about the "Top New Young Photographers" or something along those lines recently. Most of them graduated from an art or photography program, but they didn't really get their big breaks until they were in their late 20's to mid-30's. Think about your long term goals and decide which short term goals are necessary and feasible right now. This is all just my opinion, but I hope it helps.

what is the name of this movie about an old photographer and a younger girl?
Magneto

i saw this on demand a while ago and can't think of the name of it.
Basically it is an indie film about this girl who comes from a rich family but she ends up running off with this older man who is a photographer and teaches her photography. They fall in love, break up, all that stuff... i just can't think of the name.

what do you like about photography?

im starting college next fall and i've always been interested in photography. but for the past 4 years i've had my major set for graphic design. but i live in a fairly big city in ky and there really isnt that many opportunities for me here [vs new york or california] so im thinking photography will work out better, i'll be able to network with friends that can help me get my name out, intern at local studios, and practice using family members or friends as well..seems perfect for me.

so if you have any input on why you like your job [or hobby] tell me everything!

I like how you can express yourself with pictures.

How to exclude a girlfriend from the family picture?
104 Days of Summer Vacation

I have a son that just turned 2. For his first birthday I hired a photographer (whom is also a friend) to attend the party and take pictures. She was to be at the 2nd birthday party also, but it rained all weekend and we had to move the "carnival" into my mothers 4 bay semi shop at the last minute. My friend and I discussed it and decided that we would probably both be much more pleased if I just waited and had her take some outside fall pictures of me, my husband, and son (she specializes in outdoor photography.) She is very unformal, does an excellent job, makes things laid back, and takes suggestion well. I wanted to get a picture of my entire family. My son is and will be an only child. This seems the perfect time to get a family shot. Me, my husband, our son, my mom, my stepdad (they have been married for 12yrs, and he has been an active participant in my life) my mother-in-law, my father-in-law and step-mother-in-law ( they have been married for 22 yrs, and attend many functions that involve my mother in law) and my DAD. Well here is the problem. My dad that is 68 started dating a 37 yr old who really knows how long ago. I have known about her for a year. Yes, she is nice, and I do like her. They aren't married and I doubt they ever will be. Am I selfish for not wanting her in the picture? I know that I will have to have her in some, or my dad won't come. That's fine because she puts them on CD and I can print what I want. My question is how can I be sly and get at least one picture with everyone else, but her?

Even though your Dad is dating a much younger woman and it is understandable that you don't approve-you sound like you think too much of yourself. All the extraneous details about how fabulous your party will be and how wealthy your family is....zzzzzzzz! Good for you, but it is not relevant to the question you are asking.

Your father is getting old. Why don't you enjoy the last years of his life with him instead of fighting with him. You will only make things difficult for the family by acting like a spoiled child. If you say you do like your father's gf, why does it bother you if she will be in the picture. You will be alienating her AND your father. Grow up and stop being so selfish.

Family portraits, any ideas?
Sofia

Hello! We are planning on doing family portraits and using our own camera and editing software. It will be 4 families in all. My older brothers families consist of a young couple with 2 little boys and 1 on the way, another young couple with 2 little boys and one on the way, and then a third young couple with a little girl, a little boy, and a 3 month old boy. Then there are my parents, My older brother age 19, Me age 14, and my sister age 13.

Okay we are planning on doing these photos at the park (It has gardens, a path, a lake, trees, playground, ect.) We were thinking maybe fall themed. I was just wondering how to make the little kids more willing to be photographed? and what to emphasize and focus on? Maybe individual family pictures, one with just the siblings, cousins, individual shots. What do you think are some cool ideas? And wardrobe ideas? I'm just really interested in photography and want some tips. Thanks in advance,
Karen

I have always found with younger kids that the best way to shoot them is doing something that brings out their personality! As you are shooting in the park a good idea may be to get the kids to gather and play with the leaves that have fallen! Throw them around and make big piles and do something with them that you can also incorporate other family members with too! This also stops the shots looking to false or posed and gives a nicer "family time together" feel! Don't be too regimented with kids! I always think you get nicer shots if they are taken while they are playing or similar! Just my opinion! Try to make their attire echo each others eg hats, scarves, gloves, jackets, not one person dressed up and the rest dressed down! Good Luck it sounds great anyway! xx

I feel truly blessed to have had a professional career and now the opportunity to stay at home and be a Mom. I have three beautiful children and a husband whom I love beyond words. Blaise who is 8, Addi age 3, and Ethan 19 months, keep my days very busy as well as entertained! I enjoy finding new ways to help them grow, and wrapping my arms around them at every possible moment. I love the smell of fresh laundry and rainy nights full of thunderstorms. I love the Fall because I know that Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are right around the corner, a time when my family is the happiest. I love to take life slow because there is no pause button for the fun and silly times of life!
