Family And Pet Photography

Looking a name for my business (photography) mostly families, kids, pets and nature. Want something easy to remember and classy. My first name is Lori, which I could use. But want something that I could use that is non id.

Any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party and/or may be trademarked so I wanted to go a different route...

Here's a few things to keep in mind:

1) Keep your industry, your clients/customers, your advertising plan in mind.

2) The more unique & distinctive a name, the higher the chances that the name is legally available for use. And the higher the chances of obtaining the trademark.

3) Think of your business as having a personality. What kind of image do you want your business to portray?

Specific brainstorming tips:

Think about what you want but more importantly, think about what you DON'T want. If you don't want a 3-word name, don't bother with those. If you don't want non-English words, don't bother with those & so on and so forth.

What are the "types" of names you like? Think about words in their simple forms, e.g. adjectives, Latin roots, mythological names, etc. Compile a listing of the types & then seek out resources, such as books or sites, which specialize in those types.

However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I'd try them out first. This entails searching the pending & registered Federal and State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files. Then, if clear, you can decide if you would like to file for a Federal or a State trademark.

Looking for simple grass roots ways to promote my small photography business. Would like to do some type of event where they could bring their children, family, pets, etc. to be photographed. Any other promotion ideas? Any good experiences?

A couple of ideas - (1) Get hold of the local Humane Society and see if they would be interested in doing some sort of fund raiser where people could come and have their pictures taken with their pets for a small donation to the Humane Society (from which you would get a cut or just do it for publicity and hand out your card).

(2) I know a guy who did a cool thing just as a hobby and ended up with a second business. Go to your local Little League or Soccer or Football games and take action shots of the kids and hand out your card with the information of where the parents can see the pictures. This guy set up a website where the parents can log on and see the pictures and then can order some if they want to. He has it protected from anyone being able to just print the pictures from there (I don't know how you do that but it is worth checking into). Anyway, parents love to see pictures of their star athletes in action and will order copies to send to grandparents, etc. He has even been hired now by different teams to do team pictures and/or to take pictures of certain games. It has turned out great for him.

i absolutely love photography and art i cant draw but im pretty decent at taking pictures i just want a career in something i really enjoy my parents want me to be a nurse or something but i know thats not something im gonna really ENJOY. i need some insight on what you all think. Do you think it would be worth it? And in order for me to possibly establish a small business taking family pet photos or family photos what type of degree would i need for that as well? please help. :] thanks!

,You may want to think about taking some classes in Journalism, this will help you get in the door on documentary type of photography.... and if you do go to college for photography, it will help you get in the door at a newspaper or magazine, as an intern, that way you can gain experience.

You'll also want to take a basic art class in composition, and some art history, this will help too.. it really doesn't make a difference if you can draw or not...

As for the business end of things, you'll want to take basic business, finance and accounting classes, this way you'll learn to take care of and support your own business.

I'd suggest finding a college that offers a well rounded curriculum, and either take a double major, or major in either Journalism or Business and minor in photography ... that way you'll be ready for the career market, and be able to sustain yourself, until your business brings in enough money to support you.

I have all the other things i need, but need to know which lights are best for an indoor studio,and are most versitile. I will be taking senior, children, family, pet, and portrait pictures. Really need to know they must haves, im on abudget and cant afford everything id like to have.

The Adorama Flashpoint series of monolights are very good. I know because I have used them for years. The 620 light has 300 watts and is ideal for in home use, not too weak, but not too powerful. Yes, you CAN get lights that are TOO powerful for your conditions.

I do not know what you mean by "I have all the other things I need". If you mean you have stands and umbrellas and such and only need the light unit itself, here it is:

I do suggest you add the infrared trigger to fire the lights. MUCH easier and better than dealing with a cumbersome sync cord between camera and light. (Your camera may not even have a PC socket for studio lights. Many cameras no longer have the cord connection point due to the fact that it is becoming almost standard to use wireless triggering for studio light units).

I'm looking to take pictures of other animals bar my own and family members. I won't be charging for this because I'm no where near good enough but I DO want to be able to have full copyright over them. So that I can use them for whatever I want etc.
I know animals don't necessarily need a release form like we would but i'd like to create one anyway, just to cover myself. I've done some research but can't seem to find anything useful.
Does anyone have a template for this or have any helpful input they can give me?

I maybe should of said that i've asked owners to contact me if they would be willing to let me take photographs of their pets either at their own home or in public (ie, woods, parks etc).
I am also aware that I don't need a release form for my own pets...

You have full copyright over your pictures anyway.

If you want to use the shots of pets for commercial advertising purposes then you would be best getting a "property release" from the animals owners.

Google it and you will find plenty of examples.
