I'm looking for a decent photo of an African art that symbolizes a "Mother's Place" [[COPYRIGHTED]2009 june5] for a local restaurant. I would like for it to be simple and to the point and kind of small although larger images can work too I'll just make it sizable for my menu.

I'm trying to re-mat & frame some wall art & family photos. Michaels and Joanne's wants WAY more $ that I can affort. How can I do it myself? I have a straight edge & exacto knive. How do I get the beveled edge (and professional-looking results!)? Is there an inexpensive template or type of matting-knife I should use?

You can purchase a hand bevel cutter at most art supply stores--I think they cost less than $30 new. It's a metal piece that holds a cutting blade at an angle to cut the bevel. It takes a good bit of practice to get nice looking results, so buy extra matboard for practicing.

One thing I've done with photos is to mount them on top of a piece of colored paper. It's not as fancy as the beveled mats, but it looks pretty nice for framed snapshots.

I spoke with a professional photographer from Europe who told me he can not find any public art shows or even art galleries in the U.S. that would agree to exhibit photographs of nudes he has taken, even so called 'art photos.' It's not that he needs the money. He's had exhibits of his work at the Smithsonian (but they don't exhibit nudes, obviously). I am looking to find art shows where I can sell photos of nudes I've taken, but I don't want to waste my time applying if that's the case. I submitted a few samples to one gallery owner in Washington, DC (Not the Smithsonian ; ) and she said they'd be happy to display my other work--like cityscapes--but no nudes because 'families' attend the shows. Is that basically the response I'm going to get? If so, I don't want to waste my time. It does seem a bit silly to me since I see photos in Mademoiselle and Vogue that are no less risque than mine.

I don't know what parts of the US you are dealing with, but here in Ohio(which is part of the bible belt), the art shows here have nude photographs, paintings and various other art forms portraying nudity.

In the capital city of Columbus, toplessness does not constitute nudity, because the statue that defines it states that genitalia must be exposed...breasts are not genitalia by statute.

Each city, county, state could have their own laws describing what they deem as acceptable, therefore it makes it more difficult to pin down where you can and cannot show art of this kind.

I am trying to find a self publishing company, so far i have only found cheap amateur type sites, i am looking for something more professional not the "make your own book in three easy steps stuff, I already have everything lay out in Adobe page marker its a 145 page photography book on exotic places around the world
I am looking to sell the books on amazon.com and in my store, but like i said the places that i have found so far looks like they make photo books for family and friends type stuff,
can anyone recommend anything???

I did a photo/history book with lulu. They are basically a print on demand service. They are not the basic template driven photo book or vanity press. Lay it out anyway you want and they will print it. You probably need to distill it to a pdf file which should be no problem if you have it in Adobe anyways. I felt their book quality was very good, their image quality was acceptable but not great. I've had them print 120 copies so far most of which were sold retail. A 100 page full color 8.5X11paperback book ran about $18/copy. I'd use them again.

Amazon now also has a service for self publishers, but I know little about it.

I looked into blurb and while I hear the product is good, I felt there prices were so high, there was no way you could pay their printing price and be even close to competative selling a book.
