Veterans Day can be a time of remembrance. In the French Bottoms, a part of St. Joseph separated by the Missouri River, there is a sign that gives the barest hint of one family’s connection to Veterans Day.

A Missouri Department of Conservation sign says that land between a levee and the Missouri River is the Arthur DuPree Memorial Conservation Area. The News-Press met with Harvey DuPree and his sister, Gladys Freeman, who agreed to talk about Arthur “Art” DuPree, their older brother.

“We had an Uncle ‘Art’ DuPree who was one of the last soldiers killed in the First World War, and our brother ‘Art’ who was one of the first in World War II,” Mrs. Freeman said.

Arthur Joseph DuPree was born May 7, 1918, one of Joseph and Mabel DuPree’s seven sons and three daughters born on land north of today’s Rosecrans Memorial Airport. Art went on to Lafayette High School and graduated in 1937.

Jobs were tough to find back then. Art and another brother did some farming. To earn a buck or two, the brothers also worked in thrashing crews, harvesting wheat near King City.
