Family Memories
Looking a name for my business (photography) mostly families, kids, pets and nature. Want something easy to remember and classy. My first name is Lori, which I could use. But want something that I could use that is non id.
Any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party and/or may be trademarked so I wanted to go a different route...
Here's a few things to keep in mind:
1) Keep your industry, your clients/customers, your advertising plan in mind.
2) The more unique & distinctive a name, the higher the chances that the name is legally available for use. And the higher the chances of obtaining the trademark.
3) Think of your business as having a personality. What kind of image do you want your business to portray?
Specific brainstorming tips:
Think about what you want but more importantly, think about what you DON'T want. If you don't want a 3-word name, don't bother with those. If you don't want non-English words, don't bother with those & so on and so forth.
What are the "types" of names you like? Think about words in their simple forms, e.g. adjectives, Latin roots, mythological names, etc. Compile a listing of the types & then seek out resources, such as books or sites, which specialize in those types.
Here are some links where you can do some preliminary name checking:
http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=te ss&state=tbmkb6.1.1 -- USPTO – Preliminary Search of Federal trademarks
http://biztaxlaw.about.com/od/research/a /Sec_of_state.htm --Go to your state's Secretary of State page to see if they have a searchable database of business names
http://www.hoovers.com/free/
http://www.thomasnet.com – Must register (free) to search their database
However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.
Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I'd try them out first. This entails searching the pending & registered Federal and State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files. Then, if clear, you can decide if you would like to file for a Federal or a State trademark.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!
I do family photography and special events, that includes weddings, newborns, bridals, engagements, seniors etc. I've used my name before and I've used a generic item but none still feel like "me." Help.

from home. how can I legally start my own photography business and what do I need??? im very good taking pics. I have done a few photoshoots for friends and family for free. and of course my own sons photos. they all look very professional. how can i get clients and do this and make money ?
Conduct an oline search to determine that the name you select for your business is not currently in use. Then get the name of your business registered to protect it from someone else from using it. After you select a name, go to the bank or credit union and open a checking account in that name. They will also assist you in filing out all of the proper paperwork for tax purposes and assign you an EIN tax number for filing your taxes with the IRS.
Next open a website in that business name to advertise yourself. I use Go Daddy dot com for a very reasonable price of about $58. per year. Be sure to download your best work for your customers to see there.
Be sure to get business cards printed with the business name and website address. be sure you also have a GREAT portfolio of your work to show potential customers your work. After this you'll also need an advertising budget to print flyers, but space in the Yellow Pages or newspapers. Much of this advertising is also done by word of mouth. Be sure to keep receipts on EVERYTHING you purchase and use it as a tax deduction. That includes thing like photo equipment, computer equipment, internet fees, travel expenses, etc.... You can also deduct money if you convert a spare room into a "studio". It also never hurts to get advice from an accountant regarding all of this. he will also have a lot of questions to ask you which can save you headaches down the road.
