I want to expand my photography portfolio by taking family and friends pictures for free. Is this a good idea?

Ive been into photography for about 3 years now. I havent taken a class for it but I once worked as a photographer for Picture People and Ive been doing loads of research on digital photography and studying countless photographer's photos online. I want to start my own buisness here in my small town but before I do anything I want to expand my portfolio by taking my friends and families photos for free. Since most of these people are on MySpace I was wondering how I can advertise this on a bulletin and have them take me seriously.

It's an excellent idea -- building a great portfolio is your #1 task.

Make sure you have anyone you photograph sign a Model Release.

This makes sure everyone understands what the use of the images will be.

I don't know what you mean about MySpace -- talk to your friends and family in person.

Family Photography Poses and Ideas?

We are a large family, 2 adults and 5 children, and we are taking family photos. We are planning to do take the photos outdoors at a park location. I want to find some creative ideas for taking standard family photos as well as photos for our Holiday Cards.

Where can I look for poses for taking family photos? I would also like to look at some other examples. Thanks!

Think about what describes your family, or your personalities. If you are an athletic family, maybe you want to add some soccer balls or basketballs. If you are a musical family, perhaps bringing some instruments into the photo would be fun? Hamming it up could be fun too, or picking a clothing theme. See if there are any other props you could use. Have fun!

im trying to find a good digital camera for pros photography, not just family pictures?

im trying to find one that has good focus and could take good nightime pictures as well..if you have any ideas of what kind or where i could find one?

at this point, I think an advanced point and shoot camera is the camera for you - preferrable something with larger than average sensor.

The Canon Powershot G9 sounds good for you - it is the best pocket camera currently made by Canon, it takes good pictures and for sure you will not be disappointed with them. Their ability to shoot RAW and a hotshoe to attach an external flash will give you an edge on night shoot compared to regular point and shoot camera.

I wouldn't recommend a DSLR to you until you learn more about photography, or you can enroll into a photography class and get one. In this case, The Canon Digital Rebel XT or the Nikon D40 is a good way to start.

You're going to need to know about photography for a good night shoot however - and a good tripod.
