I have an idea for an organization which would help Alzheimer's patients, the elderly, and the terminally ill record their memories by a medium of their choice (i.e. audio, video, writing, or some way unique to them such as painting or photography). This will be something left for friends and families after the person involved is deceaced. I don't want anyone to think they can't come to us due to lack of money. That is very important. I would really like to start this in my area. Any idea where I could find a grant or some other way of helping this off the ground? The idea I am envisioning is a place where there would be no obsticles keeping someone who wishes to participate from it, a place where a person isn't judged by their income, religion, race, ethnic background, sexuality, etc. Where anyone who wanted to share their stories with their families after they have gone can feel free to do that.
Set up your non profit as 501C3 organization from IRS. Most private foundations, federal government and even private companies will not give to an organization that is not classified as 501c3. You can find information from the IRS website http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/ index.html
I was previously involved in the setup of a non profit, and we were able to get a pro-bono lawyer who set up everything for us, including getting the 501c3 tax status. Contact other non profits in your area and check if there are lawyers willing to work for free to get you started.
As for funding your non profit, the best resource for this is Foundation Center http://www.fdncenter.org . They have a very good database covering all organizations giving grants and you can find foundations that are interested in supporting your type of cause. However, it's a subscription based website ($19.95 per month I think is the cheapest subscription price). But it certainly is worth the fee. You can subscribe one month, and make sure you get all the info you need and then stop the subscription.
If you want to try federal sources, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants.
CFDA has several ways to search for grants. I suggest you search by beneficiary and select Private Non Profit Organization and you can find listings of grants available http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALO G.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show

My boyfriend and I are on a pretty tight budget for our wedding and so far we've had pretty good luck planning a fantastic but cost effective wedding. We had a family friend who was going to do our photography but long story made short they have had to back out. I've been pricing photographers and the cost is horrendous. Seriously, all the prices I've been quoted have been equal to the cost of the entire ceremony and reception.
We would only need a photographer for an hour or two, we do want a CD with a copyright waiver (which with some places is an additional $1000), and we're willing to work with someone less experienced but their work still needs to be of good quality.
Any ideas??
A few ideas- if you have friends who take nice photos, ask 3 or 4 of them to do it. That way you end up with lots of photos in different styles.
Another idea is to call a CC in your area and ask about photography classes, contact the instructor and go to a class one night and ask if any of the amateur photogs are willing to do it for a low fee.
Craigslist sometimes has amateurs that are willing to do it for under $500.

i'm done. no one understands me. my family mocks my interests. they only focus on the bad things i do (which apparently is everything) me being vegan and sticking up for animal rights. my parents hit me because i said ''leather is a cow's skin. its inhumane'' and i started talking about animal rights. i want piercings and tattoos and i'm opening up to them about my dreams and hopes and they shut them all down and tell me that its not possible. my parents say i ruined their lives and the family. my mom went hysterical (she goes insane sometimes and screams so loud and hits me) and she says i'm the one who ruined her life and that she can't believe she gave birth to me. i'm heartbroken. i cut myself and make myself throw up and i can't stop. the pain is too much. way too much. i can't handle this. i talk to them but they don't want to talk. they say that i'm a child and if i don't like the way things are, then i need to shut up and deal with it. i can't stand it. one day, i was felt i was done. just done and i told my mom that i want to kill myself because i was so scared. so she ran into the kitchen, grabbed the biggest knife, and said ''do it. kill yourself. make our lives easier''. when i'm sick, they refuse to take me to the doctors and i insisted on getting a therapist for my depression issues and they refuse to do that too. i can't do this anymore. i seriously want to kill myself. it'll make their lives and mine easier. i can't live with anyone because i don't have friends and my relatives are all in foreign countries.
i'm 14 by the way
they get mad at everything (me asking for a tattoo, piercings)
i cut my own hair which is bad to them because they expect girls to have long, beautiful hair so they're ''feminine''. they don't respect my interests (poetry, photography, writing novels, stories, quotes, animal rights) they wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer. but they said they gave up on me and that they don't expect anything out of me. they said they'll find me sleeping in an alley eating scraps of garbage with no job or money.
it sounds like your entire family is messed up, including you. the kid is only what their parents make them. Mouthing off about all your "beliefs" probably isnt the best thing though. Break the cycle, be better than your parents but quit bitching about not being able to handle it because there's people out there that have to deal with way worse than you. Just stop complaining and being negative. and quit asking for tattoos and piercings. thats dumb crap.

Hi everyone,
Here's an old story: I'm becoming more and more bored with my 9 to 5 life and feel that a change is really necessary.
I've always enjoyed photography as a hobby but lately my wife is telling me that if I really don't like working in an office, I should consider taking it up as a career.
My problem is that I really don't know where to start. I have no formal training and have learned most of what I know about photography on my own or just playing around and reading some books. Is it even possible to assume that I could make a reasonable living off of that? I'd be willing to take on some part time education for it but I have no clue as to what!
The other problem is that we're expecting our first child and I need to make a decision quickly on whether what's best for my family is a steady job that I hate or a risk that might be financial suicide.
Any advice? I don't even know if I should put this in the photography section or the career section :)
TIA
These are all great answers so far. I'm going to have time picking a best one.
What I meant above was that I will have a HARD time picking a best answer.
The other answers are great, but for a free taste of the business without any expediture, my best advice would suggest, JOIN A CLUB......improve your skills and meet others that think that way of starting a business and their experience and advice. It is a very competitive field and should start as a part timer. Been there, done that. Good luck.
I'm in my senior year at university studying photography, and I'm taking a class which is known to be one of the hardest class through out the whole of the photography course, it's called Home. Self explanatory really, we have to define home visually in our own way, but this is more of a philosophical course than anything. Long story short, my project is about disintegrating my home. I'm taking personal objects that belong to me and to my family and friends that are at my home, destroying them beyond recognition and then photographing them (A lot of people aren't talking to me anymore :S) . And I need some ideas on what I could destroy. So far I've done:
My boyfriends guitar
My fathers chair
My grandfathers Radio
My sisters teddy bear
My mothers telephone
My Best friends mirror
I'm running out of ideas!! I can use more than one thing from each person.. so just anything you think would look interesting would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Cat... how sinister!
Actually chris! I do have an old camera that I don't use.. You're a genius, you are. :)
I have been shooting all semester, my project has turned into this. I've gone from darkroom night photography, to video to finally digital studio shots.
I've also had regular critiques with my instructor who has aided me in progressing with my work, and it has evolved to what it is now.
I assure you, all the items i have taken i have been given permission to take (bitterly) but none the less.
How about destroying something that belongs to you such as your camera? Oh sorry I can see a snag with that one LOL.

Andover veterans honored with book of war stories - EagleTribune ...
ANDOVER — With his wounds in a mortar attack still fresh, Domenic Mariano carried another injured soldier on his back for several miles before reaching safety in the forests of Germany.
When a doctor later told him that he should return to the United States so his arm and hand injuries could heal, Mariano instead fought to return to his platoon.
After two months of training, he did just that.
Mariano, of Andover, received a Purple Heart for the wounds he suffered on Dec. 2, 1944, during the Battle of Hurtgen Forest.
The former machine-gunner in the U.S. Army's 46th Armored Infantry Regiment has a remarkable war story, but he is not alone in Andover.
Tomorrow, decorated World War II and Korean War veterans will descend upon Ballardvale Green for a Veterans Day ceremony. There, they will be presented with a book they helped create, a collection of war stories told by 29 of Andover's oldest veterans.
