What is the best camera for someone starting off in Photography?
Morice

I have always loved photography, and just did it for fun. I took my first set of actual Senior Pictures this month and posted them on MySpace. Well now I have a wedding scheduled, engagment photos, a family of 4, and a family of 8 to take.

I need a good camera, what is a worthy one that isn't the most expensive??

And do you have any suggestions as a photographer?

I have a Cannon Rebel XTI. I love it, its digital dont know if thats what your looking for. But it and the extra lenses cost me $1100 but you can pick it up for about 700 now.

Looking for family hobby. My husband and I are professional photographers and have a nine year old daughter...
Magneto

Our daughter is very artistic and being raised in a photography studio already knows a lot but my husband and I decided that we need to create a family hobby involving photography for two reasons.
One: We want to spend time with our daughter having fun and developing deeper relationships. She is fun and loves to hang with us and at nine it is the perfect time to deepend that relationship before she hits the teens.
Two: we obviously love photography but tend to do it more for work than we used to when we photographed for the simple joy.

We decided that we should make a hobby of photographing 'something' as a form of 'collecting. We live in Texas and thought we would make weekend trips with our daughter to 'discover and photograph'. BUT WHAT?
Any ideas what might be fun for two jaded pros and a little girls just learning the wonders of her camera? We don't want to do barns. Overdone. Texas wildflowers are only in the spring. We considered town squares in small towns.
For fairly creative people we seem stumped. Any ideas. Places? Objects in towns? Cars?.Really, we would love any creative ideas. Maybe we have been paid for our work too long. We really want to rediscover the joy along with teaching our daughter the joy.

Thanks!
I love the suggestions so far. In the Texas Hill Country the big ranches decorate their gates very elaborately at Christmas. We talked about doing that as a book project a couple of years ago but haven't yet. And of course that is only at Christmas.

Keep 'em coming. I can't wait to show Kiley Rea (that would be the little daughter... she is at her first away camp this week and will be excited to see all the things to choose from)
Antoni... when you are a little girl...? You are too silly! We actaully did think about horses and she already does want a pony. We live in small town Texas. Tons of horse ranches. On across the street from my mother. My husband just took her out horsebackriding a couple of weeks ago. She knows no pony where we live but is begging for riding lessons. I've told her that will only happen when we decied to give up the luxury of buying groceries! :-) ...hum... 6 months of riding lessons or a new camera....hum...think we'll stick with ballet...

Kids nowadays eh Mrs Diva.

when i was a little girl i was happy if my parents remembered my name, on my birthday they would insult me and beat me with sticks - such happy days

I know this is so unpredictable (from me) but why not Horse trekking, im sure all three of you would love a little trot in the countryside,

i make an ok living out of horses and architecture - much nicer making images in the country then with cars and people like ants everywhere.

be warned you may start hearing "mummy i want i pony" so best to explain why/why not before you go.

As one pro the another - you know this but have gotten a little stale maybe- magic hour, anything F8 @ 15secs (iso100) is my fav for landscapes, (x300, F2, AE1 etc, if poss)

Me i would burn trannies they are just so sexy, if you dont have a film scanner then i geuss digi,

Take her for some night exposures, anything with water reflections i like.

Constantly remind her how hard it was for you "I used to get up 5 minutes before i went to bed" haha

Is there a petting Zoo nearby?

Thats all I got, what a rearly lovery idea, shes a lucky girl.

What things do I need to have photography as a hobby? Any advice?
Valentin

I don't want to go to school for it, or maybe I do. I'm only 16 so I'm not sure on my career choice yet.

I might just want to do it for fun. I love taking pics of my family with my digital camera but I want the "professional" look of photos. I want to try taking pics of other things too.

Maybe like using those expensive nikon cameras. And I want to print them to make a picture album.

I know this is going to sound archaic, but go out and get yourself a simply SLR. And when I mean simple, I mean a Pentax K1000. It has no bells and no whistles. It is a plain, mechanical camera which requires the user to actually learn how to manipulate and utilize light. Shoot cheap film at first and accept the fact you'll make mistakes.

It is like anything in life, you have to start at the bottom and learn your way up. I've been trained in both photography and carpentry. And as a carpenter, I wouldn't hand you a pneumatic nailer without first knowing that you actually know how to use a hammer. I can't imagine why anyone would think photography would require any less dedication.

But I'll also tell you that once you have mastered the K1000, there isn't a camera you won't be able to master or an image you won't be able to reproduce.

Hope that helps and good luck in your future endeavours.

Photography Competition help?
104 Days of Summer Vacation

Hi
At school there's this photography competition which i would like to enter. I am stuck on inspiration though... I would appreciate it if you would share your opinions of the following topics;

Family fun
Lazy Days
Out of this world

I'm looking for inspiration, so if you have any ideas, or your opinions about the above categories for the photo competition.

I hope this makes sense :S

thanks,
Hattie x

Family Fun: Go to any public place where there's a lot of family gatherings/outings + each and everyone is interacting with one another, e.g Parks- playing hide + seek, chasing one another, Beaches- playing ball, making sand castle together, or just by involving your own family members playing twisters, wii or just a simple pool party/barbeque.

Lazy Days: e.g A person in bed, under the covers while one hand snapping the alarm clock off. The clock should show a time almost midday, while the environment is bright from midday's sun emission through the window. To add drama to it, let one of the parents standing in the doorway appearing to shout/ showing the time (let's say a clock on the wall). or a person/student in uniform with messy hair, pushing aside homeworks that need to be done as if saying "i don't feel like doing it today".

Out of this world: You can either take and ordinary situation but capturing in an extraordinary + unexpected way or arrange props for a planned shoot. For this one u would have to use your imagination, things need not need to be logical, but if possible put a sense of dramatic in it. e.g Playing with perspective- u are way in front of a car (a far distance), putting ur camera in a position in front of u and the car, then open ur mouth and focusing as if u are about to eat/bite the car, or probably something interesting as unique cloud formations...

All u need to do now is to open your mind and it'll definitely come to u...Good Luck!

We are looking for a name. Her name is Jessica but goes by Jes, my name is Chad. I will be 2nd shooter but not often.
Last name is Parkison.
We also live at the beach, so something kind of beachy would be o.k.
We want something fun and off beat. Photojournalistic style.
