As for arranging the groups, consider it an arrangement of faces. You want a pleasing composition of faces within the image. For example, you probably want to avoid stacking heads (on on top of another) when you can space them out in an alternating pattern. Also, you probably don't want to have a couple faces that are a lot closer together than the rest of them, it just wouldn't look right. The problem with using your own light (whether speedlight, studio strobe etc) is that it's hard to light a large group of people evenly. Even if you use the light on or very close to the camera, you would still have to watch that most of the people were relatively the same distance from the light...otherwise those closest will be brighter than those farther away.
