What is a good digital camera for outdoor"nature" and portrait photography?
Celebrate Independence Day

My wife and I are looking for a nice digital camera. She would like it for taking routine pictures(vacation, birthdays, etc...). I love outdoor photography, I also would like it for taking family pictures. I have a Nikon N70 and have been very happy with it but would like to go digital. Any help would be appreciated.

You didn't state a budget.
If you have some Nikon glass, take a look at the Nikon D50, D70s, or the new one, D80. Or the D200 but that is a step up in the pocketbook.
Any of these will serve you in whatever capacity you desire.
Don't forget to budget for memory cards, maybe a flash unit, and an image working software program of some kind. (Adobe Photoshop CS , Paintshop Pro, and Photoshop Elements are some of the most popular.)
You will find your wide angle lens is not as wide on a smaller sensor dslr, so you also might want either the kit lens or an ultra wide angle of some sort.
Good luck!

Photography Subjects & Lighting : How to Take Family Portraits Outdoors

Outdoor family portraits require working with nature, choosing the perfect time of day for the terrain and making the given lighting work well for ...

I need some tips for first time 'family photography'. Help please?
Omaha Fireworks

So, this is my first 'legit' paying job as a photographer, and a family has asked me to do their family photos. Do any pros have any tips? A checklist? Certain poses? How much to charge? Most people in my area charge around 80$ for a half hour sitting, and a half hour at an outdoor location, so I should charge less, right? But how much less? How many pictures do I give them? Etc. I just want to be sure that I nail this on my first time.

find out if they expect a studio sitting or want location work. Then do your homework first and inspect the location site if that's what they want. Determine whether you will need to bring accessory lighting (i.e. strobes, umbrellas, bounce cards, etc.) and what time of day will be the best lighting. Will it be indoors, or outside? If it's indoors, you will get your best results if you have a large picture window as the light source, as long as you don't have direct sunlight coming through the window. As far as the number of prints go, I would show them several "proofs" which are sample images to choose from. Then, let them select the images they want, offer them prices on a variety of sizes and possibly some package deals to get them to purchase more images.

Outdoor locations in Sacramento, Folsom, Roseville, etc. for photography?
Double Shot

I am just starting out getting into photography as a hobby and look at local photographer's websites and love all of the family portraits done in nature and wanted to know where they went to take these. I would to go out there and practice. Does anyone know where I can find these quaint wooden bridges and wooden stairs and fields in the Sacramento area? I live in Roseville. Thanks!!!

Try the capitol in downtown sacramento. I've seen plenty of wedding and engagment sessions done on the capitol steps or in the rose garden. Another place would be old town sacramento, or old town folsom by the old rainbow bridge. You can walk down to the lake and get some great shots of the rainbow bridge and the wooden foot bridge.

How much longer must we endure digital photography hype?
God Bless America

Digital photography is fine for family snapshots, news hounds, and fashion photographers, but for true art please give us a break already. Every digital or even high end digital print I see looks like complete rubbish and I visit many real galleries. You will not see me forking over money for an object of art that was autocalibrated and output by a machine, zero intrinsic value. If I wanted a poster I'd go to posters.com. Give me a traditional hand made 12x20inch platinum contact print any day. The day epson, sony, and panasonic stop telling us to buy their still video cameras, printers, inks, and papers will be a great day indeed. The day people quit believing all of this hype will also be a great day. Just look at Outdoor Photographer Magazine.. every shot in the magazine is shot on film since film is superior, yet the entire magazine is chock full of digital ads and articles.. that should tell you something. Don't believe this ridiculous hype, keep it real.

How to exclude a girlfriend from the family picture?
Omaha Fireworks - July 2, 2011

I have a son that just turned 2. For his first birthday I hired a photographer (whom is also a friend) to attend the party and take pictures. She was to be at the 2nd birthday party also, but it rained all weekend and we had to move the "carnival" into my mothers 4 bay semi shop at the last minute. My friend and I discussed it and decided that we would probably both be much more pleased if I just waited and had her take some outside fall pictures of me, my husband, and son (she specializes in outdoor photography.) She is very unformal, does an excellent job, makes things laid back, and takes suggestion well. I wanted to get a picture of my entire family. My son is and will be an only child. This seems the perfect time to get a family shot. Me, my husband, our son, my mom, my stepdad (they have been married for 12yrs, and he has been an active participant in my life) my mother-in-law, my father-in-law and step-mother-in-law ( they have been married for 22 yrs, and attend many functions that involve my mother in law) and my DAD. Well here is the problem. My dad that is 68 started dating a 37 yr old who really knows how long ago. I have known about her for a year. Yes, she is nice, and I do like her. They aren't married and I doubt they ever will be. Am I selfish for not wanting her in the picture? I know that I will have to have her in some, or my dad won't come. That's fine because she puts them on CD and I can print what I want. My question is how can I be sly and get at least one picture with everyone else, but her?

Even though your Dad is dating a much younger woman and it is understandable that you don't approve-you sound like you think too much of yourself. All the extraneous details about how fabulous your party will be and how wealthy your family is....zzzzzzzz! Good for you, but it is not relevant to the question you are asking.

Your father is getting old. Why don't you enjoy the last years of his life with him instead of fighting with him. You will only make things difficult for the family by acting like a spoiled child. If you say you do like your father's gf, why does it bother you if she will be in the picture. You will be alienating her AND your father. Grow up and stop being so selfish.
