Canon EOS if you are into affordable cameras below 1k.
If you want something above 1 grand I suggest Victor Hastleblack or Leika.

I am just starting a photography business, and my husband's aunt, after seeing pictures that I did for his parent's anniversary, have asked me to take pictures of their family for their own anniversary. How much do I charge? His aunt said to make sure I include travel costs (I will be traveling about 45 minutes each way), which I will add to the price afterward. I am going to create a DVD with all of their edited photos (group shot, individual families, grandkids, etc.) on it. What should I charge for that? I will tell them that they are free to print those pictures if they want to, but if they would like them printed on professional grade paper (as was the case in the picture they saw from husband's parents' anniversary), I will print it for them and let them know the cost once I know what they are ordering.
What do you think?
Check around your area and see what other photographers are charging and price accordingly. Do not forget to consider the price of your camera, lenses, tripod, lights and all your other overhead items. You will have to replace them eventually and just because we like to use our cameras does not mean we get them free.... Also consider your time. How much will be spent in front of a computer editing? Travel cost should also include time as well as gas, and wear & tear on your vehicle. I know it is easy to think these are people within my family but if they have agreed to pay and you have agreed to charge them then do so. Be Fair but do so. Its ok to give family a break but you have a right to make a living as well....
I'm an art teacher but I want to start doing family photography on the side.
Here's my website...

I know I don't have pricing up yet. I'm still working on that. Other than that, what should I include or change?
thanks!
awww, y'all are so sweet! Thanks!

HI,
i live in new mexico and i am starting out doing photography. i do portrait both in studio and outdoor sessions. i do family portraits both in studio and outdoor pricing. i also do wedding portraits.
does anyone know the going rates and packages for those it would rally be helpfull. i want something that has the prints optional. i tried looking at others online but they all gave certain number of prints with it. i want some thing that is a set price for time and shooting then they get a cd of the pictures included with that and the can print them there self or buy prints from me of their pictures
thanks
Whatever the market will bear.
I've seen a CD full of images sell for $250 and another sell for $2500.
Local economy, demand, talent, local taxes, overhead, competition, creativity, quality of equipment, rights and a myriad of other things will ultimately decide what you should charge.
New Mexico is, as an average, the third poorest state in the nation. You are really going to have to excel to make an income from photography in that state.
.
I am definitely persuing a career in photography. I am still building a portfolio and taking some courses. My husband's friend just had a baby & my husband told him that I could probably do some photos. This will be my first time photographing people besides my family. Should I do it for free and add some photos to my portfolio or should I charge them? If I should charge them, how much should it be? Specific ideas will be appreciated.
It is your first time. Unless you are a prodigy you are probably going to have mistakes and growing pains.
Be gentle, just charge them your actual print cost.
