I'm excited my sister asked me to be her photographer for her wedding. I've always loved photography and take loads of pictures of my own family but I've never done a wedding! I want to be sure to do an awesome job.
Make sure sister is prepared to receive less than stunning photos of her big day. Although you may do a decent job there will still be things that would be done better using a professional. Also think of this: As the event photographer you will not be participating in the festivities as a sister and honored guest. You will be working. All day. No time to chat with sis and family members. Also family members and other people may not take you seriously as the real photographer, so you may find it difficult to take control when you need to.

Also www.photo.net, look for the beginners section in the wedding and event forum.
If you decide to do it, be sure to get backup equipment of some sort. Cameras do fail, so you need to be able to continue shooting. I have given many tips to first time shooters, just look at some of my past answers and you will find my sage advice repeated many times. Good luck.

Hi, I just wanted to share this with couples that are having their weddings and need a little bit of info, in return I have some questions which would help me.
My questions are:
Who is doing your wedding photography?
Friend, family, professional?
How much are you paying for your wedding photographer?
Ball part figures with album inc.. 300-500, 500-750, 750-1000, 1000-1500, 1500-2500? (please put currency)
Now some info for you.
Weddings can be a costly affair and when it comes to a wedding its about two people and having a great day that’s fun and a little stress as possible.
We went on a bit of a hunt around for one of our wedding shoots which was a trash the dress wedding shoot, so we pretty much had to get everything to make the bride look like a bride. So for a few English pounds we managed to pull this off and she looked as good as many other brides who have spent a fortune.
Wedding dress – Ebay, it was easy and simple to order the dress in and well, they say something old… we paid just £18.00 for the dress delivered! (We are looking at other dresses around £100.00 which are made in china and take 16 weeks to get here, so this is always an option for you.
We have lots of stores that sell hair stuff and accessories (claries accessories) so we went in and bought some jewellery and a tiara. This came in at £46.00 roughly as we bought some fake nails as well.
So one bride for less than £65.00
For the groom suit hire is simple, or the wall-mart (asda) suit that is a good fit! With a good waistcoat and a cravat will add to the figure. So suit new is around £50.00 waistcoat £35.00 and cravat £3.00 or less. Suit hire is around £40.00
{If you find a fabric shop you will find you can buy lace for a veil and silks for the cravats at a very low price! Or borrow your mother veil as they say something borrowed!}
One groom £75.00
Low cost wedding venues and wedding
For some the wedding venue is the must have and for consideration is any public place, we are thinking fun! So parks, theme parks, forests etc.. anything goes if you go for a French styled wedding. By this I mean that what you do is have a small registry office wedding, which is around £35.00, just something really simple.
Then find a minister or someone that knows how to conduct a wedding to hold a wedding service for you as the minister.
This means that you can open up your theme and how you want your wedding to be. And you just repeat your wedding vows with all your invited guests.
Some locations you will need a licence to hold your wedding event, its just a small short party so it could be free but its worth checking. These charges are around £35.00
Wedding £70.00 (from)
I am writing a book on wedding cooking and it shows how to cater for weddings and events with good food and a minimal budget. I haven’t got the figures to pull off the top of my head but it works out around £6.00 per head for a four-course meal. But needs to consider chairs and tables and settings. All in all as a rough estimate that will be around £200.00
I know this is a little short and doesn’t go into detail, when I have the time, I will be putting it all on the website..
And the total is around:£410.00
We used a professional because a friend of ours used a relation to take photographs and it was a shambles. It costs us a little over $3,000AUS but we got more than we expected.
I guess you're pre-empting questions by providing the information above. I didn't think you could do that here. If people find some benefit from the above they may also want some straight tips on beach wedding photography and contemporary wedding photography.
I hope they help.
How do I find a wedding photographer that would come to the all inclusive resort? What are some ball park prices for this sort of service?
I was thinking about just getting everyone disposable cameras. I wouldn't expect all the pictures to be fantastic but it would be pretty cool to get different perspectives of the wedding and such.
Several of my family members do quite well with photography, so I'm wondering if it would be reasonable to have one of them take the more official pictures.
What was your experience and what would you recommend?
There is this photographer Larry Perez that is amazing at destination weddings. I think he just has you pay his air fare and thats it... or something. He's at www.larryperez.com
I think you will love his work. We would've booked with him but he already had a wedding that day. :(
Congrats!

I am a photographer with Digital slr gear. i would love to get into self employed photography, working from home. problem is i have no experience with this type of photography.
how could i build the skills? is it a good idea to do some for free (ie friends/family)? should i try to partner up with a photographer for a bit? should i start with "budget" packages to those that do not want to spend £800+ on a photographer and concentrate on the traditional style and build on my creativity?
Re: the point below about doing freebies when there is already a pro covering. i would love to do this, but feel that the pro might not be too pleased. any thoughts?

My wedding/reception venue is very small (30 people max) so we are only inviting immediate family and some close friends. However, since my brother had a civil ceremony we have decided to throw a huge party for our entire family, celebrating our 2 marriages, next year. Now, I have an aunt that takes phenomenal photographs, and was wondering if I could ask her to take the photos for the wedding without appearing that I am inviting her and not my uncle and their child. I just don't have the space for everyone, and would rather at least share the wedding day with my aunt over a random photographer.
Wouldn't I actually BE using her her if I invite her to the wedding and then ask her to spend the whole time taking pictures? I am not trying to save a few bucks here. I would just rather have her do the photographs than some random tacky wedding photographer.
Part 1 of the email to my Aunt:
As you know, Jim and I have been working on our wedding for a while now and have finally started picking out the where, when, and hows. We have actually decided to have a small private ceremony for just our immediate families and close friends at --.
I regretfully can't invite aunts, uncles, or cousins because of the size of the venue and what my caterers can handle.
However, I was really hoping to have you at the ceremony because you take such wonderful photographs! (I loved what you did for -- and --; those photos were gorgeous!) So I am emailing you to ask if you would like to come as our wedding photographer. The wedding date is Sunday, September 27th, 2009. You would be, of course, invited to the small dinner after the ceremony. I'm trying to make this invite professional in nature so my crazy aunts and uncles don't catch wind and get pissy, :-)
With that said, we still want to party it up with our extensive family at a later date. My brother and his wife were just married in a civil ceremony and also want to have a party so we are combining all 3 of our families and having a huge party in a few months when we get all the plans worked out. We are reserving live music, and open bar, dancing, and the cake cutting for the whole family reception later next year, so this will be a very simple event with some tea and champagne.
Well, think about it and let me know. If you'd rather not come, thats 100% a-ok! I understand, but I will definitely want you, Bill, and William at the big reception next year! Talk to you soon!
-Joanie
Unfortunately, I think that's going to cause an awkward situation since the rest of her family is not able to attend. And of course, if you ask her family to attend, then it's going to appear that you are favoring over other family members who were not invited. It's probably going to cause less drama if you hire another photographer.

Your pictures are absolutely gorgeous and you made such a beautiful bride!! I don't know if you or your mom send out Christmas cards each year, but my mom always sends out like 80 of them lol...so we got our family photo of my new hubby and I together with my parents made into a photo card for her to send out this year!! If you or anyone in your family sends out a ton of cards, then you could use one of your family pictures to make a photo card with and I would highly recommend ordering them from VistaPrint!! I helped my mom design her cards cause she had NO clue lol...but she ended up ordering 50 of them (including a color back side which is extra) plus 140 FREE matching address labels and with shipping it came to $28!! (The other 30 cards she's just gonna include a normal 4 x 6 picture inside cause the next amount above 50 cards was 100, and she didn't wanna order that many). This was a much better deal then getting photo cards from somewhere like Walgreens...
