What does anybody think about the kodak v1003 digital camera?

Thinking of getting one wanted to know what others think about it.

I can't speak to that specific model but I'll make a few general comments that may or may not help.

I've had several friends with different Kodak cameras and none have had paqrticularly happy experiences.

If you look at Kodak history, they started with a box camera that later became an instamatic and so on. Fundamentally they have always tended to design cameras that were for the mass market and very easy to use. In fact using them couldn't be simpler, you just point it and pressed the button. they also tried to make phjotography affordable by uilding their cameras as cheaply as possible so people could afford them and would buy them. They made their money on the film later instead of on the cameras. But being the cheapest also meant that they didn't build in any quality. For a short while in their history they tried to market an SLR but it never took off. It was too simple for people who needed functionality and too complicated for those who just wanted to point and shoot.

This legacy is reflected in their digital cameras too. They're very simple to use, in anyone who can't use a Kodak camera has to be intellectually challenged. Their cameras are very simple and they are often at the bottom of the price scale too.

That means flimsy plastic bodies, virtually no functionality, few features other than a few sexy things that sell cameras to unsuspecting consumers, and average pictures. The Kodak cameras I've encountered among my friends all got replaced within a couple of years by better models from other makers.

There are four makers of cameras that have a lot of experience and build solid products. These are Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Olympus. The first three have been in the camera business longer than electronics companies like Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and Casio have been in business making electronics, never mind cameras.

Unfortunately Olympus has serious reliability problems and it also used proprietary technology so it's not a good deal. Pentax is more reliable but not as reliable as the remaining two. It however comes with some of the best software for downloading and editing your images.

That leaves Nikon and Canon to consider. Both build exceptional quality into their cameras, even their cheap cameras. Both know how to build a camera to satisfy a photographer. Both produce exceptional pictures. I'd recommend looking at those two companies.

The other thing to keep in mind is that each offers cameras in two flavours. Each offers consumer models that are easy to use and have minimal features. They're great for outstanding snapshots but if you ever get into anything really challenging you'll be disappointed and quite possibly frustrated.

The other models they offer operate the same way, they're easy to use and take great snapshots but at the same time also offer you the ability to take control of the camera. These models tend to be more expensive but not much more expensive. With these if you are an aspiring photographer, you can eventually play with the exposure variables and master the art of photography eventually leading to acquiring a far more sophisticated camera.

Which model you look at depends really on whether you're interested in just getting nice pictures or also getting involved in how the pictures are made.

Finally, beyond which category of camera you're interested in, look at resolution (mega pixels) six or more is usually fine for most people, that will allow you to print up to 8 x 10 images perfectly, you can often even push 6MP to 11x14 prints. And look at zoom - optical zoom - the digital one is no good in any camera. Generally a longer zoom is handier than a short one. I'd say look at something like a 6x or longer zoom and if it is longer see that the camera has an image stabilizor too.

I know this can all sound really complicated but if you perservere you'll find it gets easier all the time. If you really want to keep it simple you can settle for an inexpensive point and shoot from Nikon or Canon today and later as you get more sophisticated you can always get a more functional one later. That's actually what I did when I went from film to digital. I started with a reasonably simply P&S camera and now I use both a sophisticated P&S that allows me total control and I use a Nikon digital SLR.

I hope this helps a little.

Nothing has happened to the camera, so I don't understand why this would happen. I contacted the company by e-mail, because of course they don't have a 800 number. No answer yet.

Underwater case for Kodak digital camera?

I've recently bought a Kodak digital camera (a V1003) and I want to take it diving so I can get some good shots of the reef.

I can't seem to find a housing for it anywhere, have checked with Kodak, eBay and Ikelite.

Can anyone tell me if a housing even exists for this camera (which it certainly doesn't appear to), or suggest a suitable alternative?

Seems like Ikelite would have one for it. They seem to have alot of housings. You might want to check in the back of dive magazines ( like Skin Diver ) where all the ads are. Seems like I have seen several after-market companies offering housings. I've seen those "zip lock" style bags that have the clear glass where your lens would be but not sure the depth ratings on those. Good Luck !

just found this...
