Minolta 500mm

The Minolta is an older, 35mm model (SRT 202)and I want to purchase a digital, SLR, to be able to take bird/flower nature pictures (and of grand kids playing sports). I have the telescopic lens but was told it won't work with the newer cameras. ( I inherited camera and lens).

It won't work straight-out on a Nikon body.

There exist adapters to convert between different mounts, but in the case of Nikon's mount design it is possible to make converters from nikon lenses to other maker's bodies, but vice-versa is not practical (you lose the ability to focus at infinity). In addition you lose most if not all automation on the lens (autofocus, in some cases exposure metering and aperture actuation).

i have a Promaster Spectrum 7 500mm lens i bought with a few other lenses for my minolta maxxum 7000. i havent figured out what to use the mirrored lens for. please help so i can use its full potential

A 500mm lens can be useful for sports and wildlife, etc. Anything where you require insane reach.

The mirror part only refers to the technical design of the lens, not what you can use it for. A mirror lens is cheaper to manufacture and more compact than a regular version. Mirror lenses also have a tell tale image characteristic: any light point that is out of focus will appear as a ring instead of as a solid blob. This is referred to as "donut bokeh". Donut bokeh is generally considered unpleasing. Also, Promaster lenses don't have the same great optics as a good Minolta or other brand name lens... not as sharp, etc. Basically, the Promaster was designed to provide cheap reach. It retails for about $100 vs. thousands for a quality 500mm lens. All in all, not a bad deal.

I have a Cannon 300D Digital SLR camera.

I also have many prime lenses for my older SLR (non-digital) Minolta X-300 including a 500mm lens.

Please doesanyone know of an adaptor to use the older lenses on the new Digital SLR. I am not so worried about the auto focus that I'll loose with the older lenses. Manual focus not a problem?

Probably nothing that you could find at this point. It's not just as simple as making the mechanical connection, the distance between the focal plane would also need to match to allow proper (manual) focusing.

Here is a link where some folks discuss this, it is possible, but it doesn't sound very practical.
