hey guys for some odd coincidence i found an old minolta x700 with a minolta 50mm lens on it in an old box in my basement....the reason its a coincidence is because im getting a canon rebel xsi for christmas. So i was wondering if the minolta 50mm would fit on my new xsi.
p.s. this minolta was made back in the 80's
You can buy an adapter to use the older Minolta "SR" mount lenses like you found on a Canon DSLR body. Check here:

also on the lens i see MD so im guessing thats the mount for it.
As far as I know, there isn't even an adapter for that.
However, you could have fun with reverse mounting that lens onto a Canon lens for awesome macro shots.

okay i just got a minolta x-370 from a friend and its in pretty much perfect condition and shoots great. The only problem is that on the minolta rokkor 50mm 1:1.4 lens the aperture will go from f\1.7 all the way up to a f\16 but when i try to go back down to have a larger aperture, the ring will move but the lens will do nothing unless i move the aperture control lever (idk what its called the nob thing sticking out at the bottom of the lens), is there anything that i can do for it? should i go take it in, and how much am i expecting it to cost for fixing?
ok sorry let me clarify when i remove the lens from the body and through it and change the f stop to something say from f/1.4 to f/16 i can see it change inside the lens , but when i go the opposite direction i can not see the change inside the lens, unless i move the f stop to something lower than f/16 (ie. f/1.4) then move the Automatic Aperture Coupling Lever ( that what it looks like in this picture http://www.butkus.org/chinon/mamiya/mami ya_ze-2/parts02.jpg) its that little lever that you can see when you remove the lens from the body, The lever moves when you change the f-stop and it moves when i got from f\1.4 to f\16 but doesnt when i got from f\16 to f\1.4 unless put it on f\1.4 then move that lever with my finger then put the camera back on the body and i will be at f\1.4. and what i ment by seeing it is when the lens is off the body and you look into it (http://www.elizabethannedesigns.com/livi ng/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/apertur.jp g) i can see that ring inside the camera.
continued from above. I can see the actual aperture change inside the lens whens its off the body, but i can only see it change when it goes from f\16 to f\1.4 but not the other way, Also to clarify any confusion on other details i read it wrong SORRY its when i go from f\16 to f\1.4 that the aperture ring inside the lens does not change(seems to get stuck, so all other details that i said f\1.4 to f\16 change to f\16 to f\1.4 sorry i got it backwards)
You will not see any change in the aperture through the lens as you go from f1.4 to f16. What you will see is the shutter speed change. That's the beauty of a meter-coupled lens. If you actually saw a change in the aperture size you'd be using what's known as "stop-down metering" and that is not something you'd want to do.
The lens appears to stay wide-open regardless of the f-stop you set until the moment you release the shutter. At that time the lens automatically stops down to the taking aperture you chose (f5.6, f8, whatever).
okay i just got a minolta x-370 from a friend and its in pretty much perfect condition and shoots great. The only problem is that on the minolta rokkor 50mm 1:1.4 lens the aperture will go from f\16 all the way down to a f\1.4 but when i try to go back up to have a larger aperture, the ring moves but the aperture ring inside the lens does not change. It seems to get stuck anytime you try to go from a lower aperture number (completely open) to any higher aperture number(i.e anything above f\stop number). When i remove the lens from the body and look through it and change the f stop to something say from f/16 to f/1.4 i can see it change inside the lens , but when i go the opposite direction i can not see the change inside the lens, unless i move the f stop to something higher than f/1.4 (ie. f/16) then move the Automatic Aperture Coupling Lever ( that what it looks like in this picture http://www.butkus.org/chinon/mamiya/mami ya_ze-2/parts02.jpg) its that little lever that you can see when you remove the lens from the body, The lever moves when you change the f-stop and it moves when i go from f\16 to f\1.4 but doesn't when i go from f\1.4 to f\16 (it just stays completely open) unless put it on f\1.4 then move that lever with my finger then put the camera back on the body and i will be at f\1.4. See the aperture ring on the lens works and moves but the actual aperture INSIDE the lens seems to get stuck when you go from anything wide open to something smaller letting less light in.is there anything that i can do for it? should i go take it in, and how much am i expecting it to cost for fixing?
ok so i set the lens to complete open aperture and when i move it from the f\1.4 to say f\16 i see nothing happen inside the lens so i put the lens back on the camera set the aperture to f\16 (inside the lens it is still completely open aperture) took a picture and pulled the lens off the camera and the aperture was still wide open?
A very long time ago lenses did not "couple" to the meter in the camera. When you used f1.4 your viewfinder was bright. As you stopped down to f4 or f5.6 or f8, etc. your viewfinder got darker and darker. This was called "stop-down metering" and, as you've probably guessed, wasn't very suitable for fast shooting.
Then camera companies developed "meter coupled" lenses. Now the diaphragm in the lens stayed wide open regardless of the f-stop chosen. The in-camera meter sensitivity was decreased to match the chosen f-stop. Your viewfinder stayed nice and bright, making composing and focusing easier.
As you release the shutter, the diaphragm automatically stops down to the f-stop you chose.
So you won't see any change when looking through the viewfinder whether you use f1.4 or f16.
