If your lens is for the older Minolta manual focus cameras like the SRT-202 or XG-9 or XE-7 or X-700 then it is not compatible with any current DSLR.
If your lens is for the Minolta Maxxum 7000 and later series cameras then it will work fine on the Sony Alpha Series DSLR cameras.
However, you should be able to find an MC/MD/AF adapter to use it on the Sony DSLRs with some searching. Try keh.com and bhphotovideo.com and adorama.com and beachcamera.com and huntscamera.com. Please note that you will have limited functions using the lens - stop down metering, manual focus.
There is also an adapter to use the older Minolta MC/MD lenses on the Canon DSLR cameras.

what does 'APO' stand for in camera lenses, for example, in Minolta lens 100-300mm f.4.5-5.6 APO D AF?
(Apochromat) is a photographic or other lens that has better color correction than the much more common achromat lenses.

I own a Konica Minolta Maxxum 4 SLR 35mm camera. I don't know much about the lenses but want to get that 5x magnification for shooting insects. Is a Extension Tube required and what type? What am I supposed to get?
Here are some lenses for this camera but I don't know which one would give me the 5x zoom
MACRO LENSES
* AF 50mm f/2.8 Macro(D)
* AF 50mm f/3.5 Macro
* AF 100mm f/2.8 Macro(D)
* AF 200mm f/4 Macro Apo G
* AF Macro Zoom 3X -1X f/1.7-2.8
I want to photograph an ant so I can see all the fine details.
An extension tube is an alternative to a macro lens. A macro lens is better because the lens is designed for close-up work. An extension tube might be cheaper. It just allows your existing lens to focus closer.
I would say f2.8 is better than f3.5, but the difference is not much, only half a stop. At macro settings you don't have as much depth of field, so wide open f-stops are harder to use anyway.
A longer macro lens is nicer because you don't have to get up as close, but it means you have to hold the camera that much steadier because it magnifies 'camera shake'. (In fact it's nice to have a tripod anyway with a macro lens.)
Otherwise I'd say generally more expensive is better. So it gets to be a matter of how much you want to spend.

Included with the lens are: Minolta front 154.5mm clear filter.Minolta front lens cover and rear lens cap.Drop-in filter holder with clear filter.Filter case with 5 filters – R60, O56, Y52, 1B (skylight), ND4.The trunk case with keys which is in overall good condition. It does have some minor dents and scratches on the outside and some of the rivets are a little rusty. The interior is pretty much perfect.Original manual.Lens strap.Case strap. I cannot see any marks, scratches, haze or fungus on any of the glass. Both manual and AF work as they should and the aperture blades are clean and oil free. The lens mount is in good condition with just a few usage marks which should be visible in the photograph. There is an area on the lens barrel about an inch and a half long by about half an inch wide where the paint has rubbed off. I had the lens on a shoulder strap and walked about a mile not realizing that it was rubbing on the buckle of my jacket. The lens was not banged or dropped. There are a couple of other very small marks and a couple of paint chips on some of the edges. The tripod foot is clean but it has lost its insert and the marks you can see on the sides are from the glue. The lens hood moves smoothly and locks in place. I am limited to 12 images of this lens. Please send me your email address if you want more specific/detailed photographs of any area of the lens or accessories. I am also selling a Minolta 2x tele-converter. Payment within 7 days please.
