Choosing binoculars for safari and nature watching.?

Hi, I'm going to be spending 3 months volunteering on wildlife reserves in Africa and will invest in a high quality pair of binoculars. I've used 10x25 Leica before which has incredible clarity and magnification and lightness, but was limited in field of view (hard to get the context) and twilight ability.

I'm not sure whether to get 10x42 or 10x32 or 8x32. Anybody with longterm experience of working on safari / game parks?

What is the best compromise?

Many thanks

Stick with the Leica. Geta set of 10X42's but make sure you get the new "Ruby" coated objective lens model. Excellent UVA protection by day and quality and clarity in fading or lower level light conditions, that will be pretty common place in Africa. Pricey, but I am sure you are already aware that Leica quality costs....Good Luck!

Hi, which brand of binocular is preferred, or most popular Zeiss, Leica or Swarovsk?

Birders prefer Swarovsk if they have the money to buy a pair. Zeiss and Leica are not all that popular with birders, but I believe Leica is preferred over Zeiss which do not have all that great a reputation among birders. Next to Swarovsk Nikons are considered amongst birders. Some actually prefer Nikon over Swarovsk.

LEICA ULTRAVID 10 x 42 HD
LEICA ULTRAVID 10 x 42 HD High-performance binocular with 42 mm objective lens diameter, 10 x magnification and a field of view of 336 ft allows for a great overview and steadiness of image.
A large field of view with great edge-to-edge sharpness, combined with a bright and steady image, characterize this binocular.

What binocular brand is the best?

What binocular brand do you think is the best. I am thinking about getting new binoculars and its between these brands. Zeiss, swarovski, and Leica. You could put what you like the most if its not listed.

Leupold, Meopta, Minox, plenty of others...
Not a dud in any of these....

If you ask a birder, you will get the answer Swarovsk. Personally I think that the Nikon Premier LX L 8x42 are the best, but they are not so popular as the Swarovsk.

  • Buy Cheap

  • Hi, which brand of binocular is preferred, or most popular Zeiss ...

Zeiss and Swarovski make fine binoculars and which one you buy depends largely on your application. (I don’t know if Leica still produces a good product. Many of their modern products are not up to their historical standards.) More important than the manufacturer is which pupil size and magnification you choose.

When I performed a survey a few years ago I decided that Swarovski was by far the better binocular. It’s imagery was superior (both chromatic, sharpness and distortion) and it seemed more rugged. In addition, it seems to be the choice of bird watchers which is always a good guide.

However, you should also consider the optically stabalized binoculars made by Canon and products made by Nikon.
