I have heard a lot recently about how "excited" people are over their Leica cameras. I've looked for some info about them, and found nothing special, other than the fact that they are insanely expensive. So, what makes it any better than a Nikon or Canon?
The answer is very simple.
Quality of build.
Leica cameras have a reputation as the very best built in the small format range. If you are a purist and want the very best quality you can buy, you will buy a Leica. For a professional it is an investment in the quality of work s/he will be able to produce.
Expensive? Very as a hobby camera. Value for money cannot be beat.
I was never able to afford such a camera. I had a photo studio for some 25years and shot with Nikons and Hasselblads and always wanted a Leica. The newest Leica the S2 was just introduced. Note: It is a SLR not a rangefinder camera as the older models were.

I have heard a price of $8,000 is that expensive. Not for a pro it is a tool of the trade. Remember some lenses for Nikons can get into the $6,000 range and the new high resolution Hasselblad sells for $36,000.
Worth every penny to the professional photographer. The most expensive camera I had was a motorized Hasselblad that cost about $2,500 in 1983. Did it actually cost me anything? NO, it was a tool and paid for itself and paid me to use it. As a hobby camera I could never justify the cost.
To put things in perspective. The person who can afford and buys the Leica can use it 24hours a day, 365 days a year. How often can someone use his/her $15,000 boat.
Myself I shoot now with two Sony R1 cameras ~$1,000 each and a Sony H5 that cost ~$550.
The Sony's used for stereo-graphic photography

It is now my hobby.
Price is relative. You want the best car? Get a Bently, be prepared to spend over $150,000.
In response to an answer prior to mine. All lenses of cameras that cost over a couple hundred dollars are made of glass. Most with some very exotic glass the was not available even ten years ago. Top cameras have never been better than they are now.

I've always been and always will be film camera (leica) photographer, but I'd like a decent cheap digital camera for non-art purposes. are the lumix cameras with the leica lenses good? are they comparable in some way to leica film lenses? what are some good cameras in the 100-150 range? is there somewhere i can go to see examples of image taken with various cameras on the web?
thanks
If you are used to Leica film cameras, then you're going to be VERY disappointed with any cheap digital camera. They don't come anywhere near the quality of a Leica 35mm camera (or any good quality film camera, for that matter). You would be taking a major step backward.
Cheap digital cameras (such as point and shoot digital cameras) are about the same level quality as what 110 film cameras were like.
You can get a decent digital camera for snapshots for around $100, but certainly nothing that would compare with what you can get from a Leica...or any other good quality manual film camera.
I know I'm going to get voted thumbs down for saying this. That's fine. It's the truth. I just can't believe you would be going from a Leica to a digital point and shoot camera. I mean, why would you?? I use almost entirely film for all my photos (35mm and 120 size roll film) and I love it. I have an 8 megapixel digital camera, but I mostly just use it for snapshots when I'm out with my friends. I wouldn't even think of trying to replace one of my 35mm SLR or rangefinder cameras with it. That would be taking a step backward. And definitely forget about trying to replace a medium format film camera with a digital P&S camera...no way.
If you just want a small, lightweight digital camera for casual snapshots of your friends and family, then yeah you can get a decent digital camera for around $150. If you want a zoom lens, then be sure to get true optical zoom, not digital zoom. But again, don't expect it to replace a Leica. It's nice for convenience, and you can take decent pictures with a digital camera...but I definitely would not consider it a replacement for a good quality manual film camera.

10-megapixel CCD captures enough detail for photo-quality 18 x 24-inch prints
High-quality Leica lens takes in stunning shots from the wide-angle to the telephoto range
O.I.S. optical stabilization technology and ultra fast processing
I always wanted a Leica, even though i have little camera knowledge..
but...panasonic?? I was all set to buy a Canon as my first digital, but now Im reconsidering it.
perhaps the DMC-FZ28 would be too complicated for a beginner though?
I agree with Ben. Panasonic and Leica have several sister models in the digital point & shoot market but these are really just Panasonics. Not that there's anything wrong with Panasonic cameras... but they are not the stuff that Leica is famous for.
Leica's reputation is based on $2000 lenses for their rangefinder models. You can rest assured that Leica does not stick those lenses on point & shoots cameras. (The Fz28 costs $270, lens and all.) The famous Leica lenses are also all primes. Any professional quality lens, by any brand, will be a prime lens or a 3x zoom lens at the most. An 18x zoom lens such as on the Fz28 requires too many design compromises in favor of convenience.
If you're going to get a point & shoot, the Canon G10 is as good as it gets. But this presents another dilemma: the G10 is a $500 camera and for $50 less you could buy a Nikon D40 dSLR camera - for any serious amateur the dSLR would be a much better choice.
Having said all that, the Fz28 does get good reviews. If you're just looking for a fun camera, I doubt you'd regret getting one. Here's an in-depth review from one of my favorite sites: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_revi ews/panasonic_fz28_pg5.html
I have some Leica equipment that I want to sell (M8, M7, M6 TTL, one Noctilux, one Tri Elmar Lens, 2 Viewfinder etc.)
Who buys used Leica equipment in NY? References / Experiences / Beware notes are welcome. Thank you!
When it comes to Leica gear, the options are smaller than they used to be.
First of all, B&H and Adorama will not work for you, as they are too big to have the special attention that is required for Leica.
Of the smaller and "Leica" oriented places, Tamarkin New York (www.tamarkin.com) used to be a powerhouse until they left about a year ago. Ken Hansen was another good option but he too is no longer in business.
Of the remainder, you have Photo Village (www.photovillage.com) - very decent - dealing with Leica equipment. Will is quite knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with.
Kurland Photo (www.kurlandphoto.com) is another dealer of high end brands like Hasselblad, Rollei and Leica. You will get proper answers to your questions about Leica gear. Craig Williams (ex manager of Tamarkin New York) handles the dealings and he is very knowledgeable about Leica - especially M gear.
As per reference and experience;
I wanted to sell some R lenses back in the spring and my friend referred me to a new place that he dealt with before, called Kamerahaus. (www.kamerahaus.com)
Their website looks pretty basic, it looks like an online buying portal. Basically, I sent them a list, they gave me a quote (which was slightly higher than the others at that time), I said OK I want to do it and they mailed me a prepaid UPS shipping label to ship the items to them, which blew me away.
I shipped everything, they got it next day and 4 hours after the UPS delivery, I received a tracking number for my check.
They seem to be operating like Used Camera Buyer (www.usedcamerabuyer.com) but I was satisfied with the speedy service and generous evaluation.
Of course, you always have the option to sell it privately if you can. You will always get more for your gear.
-You can post it on forums (heard stories like people keep you waiting at a Starbucks late night and never show up)
-You can sell it on ebay - not recommended. (may tike time, some buyers buy and don't pay, a lot of fraudulent people who claim they never received it and get chargeback from paypal, now you're out of the gear and still have to pay the chargeback. Ebay and Paypal commissions will kill up to %15 of the final price)
Hope this information works for you. Good luck with your sale.
