Do you think Leica is making as much money as Canon or Nikon make?

Leica, a company that produce the best Camera lenses in the world. There is one thing about leica that almost everyone knows, their products are extremely expensive, that is a big disadvantage, people can choose to buy a much more cheaper and lenses that are produce by other companies like Canon or Nikon, the lenses that they produce does not seem to be worst that Leica's, so the Questions is, do you think leica makes as much money as Canon or Nikon make. Hope i can get a good answer.

No. Leica, Ag. is by comparison a small German manufacturer of some of the best optical equipment in the world. The concept behind thierr compact cameras is roughly 100 years old (but of course modernized) and their optics are superb whether in a rifle scope, binoculars, lens, or monocular. I don't know if they are still independent, but regardless Leica does not have the cash flow (or want it) of Canon or Nikon. Canon and Nikon are very large companies that are into a lot of imaging technology that goes beyond cameras. Copiers, printers, scanners, medical imaging equipment and the like. Ditto for Nikon (but not the same products) but I have no idea of their size. Bottom line, you're comparing a small camera maker to two huge multinational firms that make cameras as part of their business. Leica never set out to do that. So they may make more money per unit sold than Canon or Nikon, but they do do make more money as a company..

What's a good digital camera with a good lens (maybe leica) for around $100?

I've always been and always will be film camera (leica) photographer, but I'd like a decent cheap digital camera for non-art purposes. are the lumix cameras with the leica lenses good? are they comparable in some way to leica film lenses? what are some good cameras in the 100-150 range? is there somewhere i can go to see examples of image taken with various cameras on the web?
thanks

If you are used to Leica film cameras, then you're going to be VERY disappointed with any cheap digital camera. They don't come anywhere near the quality of a Leica 35mm camera (or any good quality film camera, for that matter). You would be taking a major step backward.

Cheap digital cameras (such as point and shoot digital cameras) are about the same level quality as what 110 film cameras were like.

You can get a decent digital camera for snapshots for around $100, but certainly nothing that would compare with what you can get from a Leica...or any other good quality manual film camera.

I know I'm going to get voted thumbs down for saying this. That's fine. It's the truth. I just can't believe you would be going from a Leica to a digital point and shoot camera. I mean, why would you?? I use almost entirely film for all my photos (35mm and 120 size roll film) and I love it. I have an 8 megapixel digital camera, but I mostly just use it for snapshots when I'm out with my friends. I wouldn't even think of trying to replace one of my 35mm SLR or rangefinder cameras with it. That would be taking a step backward. And definitely forget about trying to replace a medium format film camera with a digital P&S camera...no way.

If you just want a small, lightweight digital camera for casual snapshots of your friends and family, then yeah you can get a decent digital camera for around $150. If you want a zoom lens, then be sure to get true optical zoom, not digital zoom. But again, don't expect it to replace a Leica. It's nice for convenience, and you can take decent pictures with a digital camera...but I definitely would not consider it a replacement for a good quality manual film camera.

How can I find reasonable values for a Leica R3 35mm camera body and lenses?

I have a Leica R3 35mm body and several lenses all in near mint condition with no use for them and those online "sell me your camera" sites seem way too low.

You should expect a lower price from a buyer who plans to resell the equipment. After all, they have to make a profit.

I suggest checking here:

http://www.kurlandphoto.com
http://www.georgeury.com/
http://www.keh.com
http://www.bhphotovideo.com
http://www.adorama.com

Kurland and Ury are both Leica specialists. If you check their web sites you should get an idea of what they think your camera and lenses are worth based on their asking prices. You can do the same KEH, B&H and Adorama. You can then list them on eBay or your local craigslist for a comparable price.

What is the Leica equivilent of a Canon EOS 40D?

Hi, does anyone know what the Leica equivilent of a Canon EOS 40D would be, the most similiar?

Thanks!

Of current models, the Digilux 3 would be the closest. Its a four-thirds mount camera with live-view similar to Panasonic's models.
