Nikon Coolpix L20

Both of these cameras are with 4x digital zoom. Nikon L20 manual says that while recording, digital zoom can be applied upto 2x only. Canon does not mention it specifically. Are both with same digital zoom ?

As I am student, I don't want a really costly camera. I did some search and found these two models were fit for me. Which one of the two should I buy based on the picture quality?

Canon compact cameras generally tend to be better than Nikon compacts. However, no compact camera is perfect, especially a budget priced one...but the A480 still produces very good quality images (in good lighting).
I doubt if you will be disappointed if you buy it...

Is there a certain trick to this cord, or was I given the wrong one?

It's either the wrong one or it's damaged.
Look at the end carefully and make sure it is exactly the same shape as on the camera. Make sure that there aren't any little things sticking out the wrong way or bent. If you see something that looks bent wrong, carefully bend it back the right way with a toothpick.

My Nikon Coolpix L20 digital camera isn't being recognized by my laptop, so i can't transfer my pics to my computer, someone please help, my OS is Windows Vista

Get a USB Card Reader. You won't need any driver (software) for it as Mac and Windows support it fully. It is truly plug and play. Get one of those card that reads all types of cards--it will work with your camera now, or in the future.

You won't drain the battery in you camera with this device either. Recharging the battery in your camera repeatedly simply wears it out--and you will have to replace it in time--and that's expensive.

I am money consious. The L20 is only $130 while the SD780 is $270. I was wondering whether the SD780 is worth the money, or I should just get the L20. I plan to use the camera to take vacation pics, and maybe make some videos. Which camera should i get?
Yes, but is it worth the extra $140?

Definitely the Canon Powershot SD780. It shoots better quality pictures and has HD Video plus many other features.
