If anyone knows this type of camera, can you tell me how the flash is used because I have to take some night pictues. Can you also tell me what is the cold temperature tolerance of it? I don't know if a temperature in the 40's will be good for it.
Here's a thorough (29 page) review of the Nikon D2H with plenty of tips on it's use.

And another review with comments about the flash system.

I doubt that temperatures in the 40's will hurt it, as it's designed for sports photographer braving the elements throughtout the damp and chilly winter. I read on Nikonians.org (a favorite forum I belong to) that users have used that model at temperatures below -10 degrees F. with no problem. The only handicap was the shorter lifespan of the batteries because of the temperature.
Here's a quote from DVDMike on that forum.
"I'm on my way back from the Adirondacks and I thought that I'd post that the D2H performed quite admirably in very cold weather, including the battery. I shot two days in daytime temperatures ranging from -10f to -20f (without wind chill) and shot several hundred pictures without changing or charging the battery. I changed the battery once when the original dipped below the 100% mark and I can't tell you how many pictures that I took on that battery before driving up to snow country. All and all, I took over 1200 pictures on the trip and changed the battery once. I shot everything in RAW+Jpg basic mode, used AF-continuous for almost all shots and used 300mm, 70-200vr and the 17-35. Many shots were taken with the 1.4 TCII teleconverter. The D2H performed in the frigid cold just as it had done for me in normal temperatures. This is probably not a surprise to anyone, but I thought that I'd mention it anyway"

Here's some links to info about the D2H and flash use.

You might want to go there and join. It's a great source of helpful information.

The D2H, unlike it's prosumer cousins, doesn't have a built-in flash. You'll need to attach an SB series flash for full functionality.
Take a look at my latest and greatest toy. The Nikon D2H! This is by far my favorite camera I've ever operated
I've shot Nikon my whole life - FM2s, F4s, the D1 and most recently, the D100.
I prefer the ruggedness of pro cameras, even if the predominantly plastic D100 has more pixels.
Not having the money for a D2X, I'm seriously considering a used D2h (retailing used for about $1200 on Craigslist).
Any opinions, comparisons and contrasts, etc. are GREATLY appreciated!
The D2h is claimed to be a great sports shooter camera thanks to its Multicam 2000 autofocus system, the same used in the D2x.
You can find more sample images here: http://www.pbase.com/cameras/nikon/d2h
A small pitfall of the D2h is its 4.1 MP rating, though this might not be of concern for some users who don't print large or sell images that require higher resolutions. Also said to be the best nikon camera to produce low noise images, perhaps due to its 4.1 MP and large sensor.
A nikon user such as yourself should definitely know about nikonians.com, You can find lots of help there and in their forum.

My Nikon d2h is getting a error message after every shot.. is this a sign of the shutter failing? I checked the actuation and it has less than 6K...
Yup, that's one of the typical signs of shutter failure. Usually it's accompanied by actual mechanical failure - that is, one of the shutter blades blowing out - but not always.
If your shutter really only has 6,000 shots on it and the camera's still under warranty (and maybe even if it's not), Nikon should cover that repair - keep in mind, though, not all those shutter count programs are as accurate as you think.
If Nikon doesn't cover it, don't feel bound to send your camera to them - there are plenty of other repair shops around who can do the same repairs, often for less than Nikon would charge.

ive found a cheap nikon d2h camera, and i was thinking of getting it (since my only other camera is a Nikon D40 and i want a camera to autofocus my 50mm f/1.8 lens with).
i know the megapixel count usually isnt that important to a certain point, but the Nikon D2H only goes up to 4.1 megapixels.
do you think of this as a big drawback? and for around $200, would you get it?
haha kenrockwell.com is definitely an amazing site.
i'm definitely not gonna make them huge or anything. if i am printing, then maybe sizes ranging from a full sheet of paper to a small poster.
would this camera suit these needs? lol
The D2H was introduced five years ago. In camera years: that's pretty ancient. Its image quality is not visibly better than the D40 you own right now, and may in fact, be worse. However, it does offer faster frames per second shooting.
In the end, I wouldn't recommend it. Its weight is enough to make you think twice before strapping it onto your neck for more than 2 hours at a time, much like strapping a dumbell. The D40 weighs way less, and produce images that should be on par with the D2H, or even better.
If you really need a new camera, I recommend the D80. It shares the same 10 megapixel sensor as its D200 brother, which was introduced as a semi-pro camera 2 years ago. It also autofocus with non-AFS lenses.
ive found a nikon d2h on amazon for 500 and this fits my budget. but its only the camera body, so would i be able to use my nikon d40s lens which is a nikkor 18 to 55 mm lens with my nikon d2h body?
ok im editing this a little. i do shoot sports. im sorry i forgot to mention that and thats that only reason i wanted a d2h. i shoot skateboarding. and my d40 is only 2.5 fps. i need somthing a lot faster.
Keep the D40. ... for now. If you want to upgrade to a more robust camera, look for a good used D200.
And yes, any AF-S lens is usable on any of the Nikon DSLR's
