Nikon D2x

Right now I have a Nikkor 55-200 mm lens for my Nikon D2x, and I really absolutely love it but this summer I'm going to be doing a safari in Africa and I'm worried I won't be able to zoom in far enough to get some really up close shots of the animals. So in other words, I want to upgrade, but I need something preferably under $1,000. Any ideas?

After 200 mm, things get real expensive.

THE lens for your trip is really the 200-400 mm f/4, but it costs about 5x your budget. So you may want to look at the 70-300 mm VR lens as a compromise, but well within your $1,000 budget

Be sure that you get your new lens in plenty of time to "road-test" it for a few months before you attempt to use it in the "wild"

Perfect weather for photographs an even cloudy light. But for some reason some photographs were bleached out but really badly. We tried different settings and also flash off / on, manual etc. but still the same problem on BOTH cameras? We work with Nikon flashes and lenses. No problems with studio light in a studio environment? Anybode else experienced such problems?

I have the option of either buying a used D2x or a brand new D300s for the same price. What would you recommend?

New D300.

There have been vast improvements in noise, colour and other aspects.

The d2x was/is a good camera but I would go new and improved for that price.

I shoot a lot of low light fast motion concert type events. I currently shoot with a Canon 20D, and am going to upgrade. What Camera would you go with?
The Nikon seems to be a better choice on price, but I've been told the Canon outperforms the Nikon. Any suggestions?

These are both nice cameras, but they are both 4-5 years old. They were probably used by professionals who shot a lot of pictures and now they want to sell their used equipment. Be sure that you find out how many shutter activations there have been. This is available in the exif data of the last picture taken, so don't take anyone's word for it. Shoot one more picture yourself and check. If they have over 100,000 shots, I'd be wary of either one. These things do have a finite life and 100,000 means there's not much life left.

I otherwise agree that you may as well get the Canon, since you have lenses, but with a qualification. Your 20D has a crop factor of 1.6X and the 1D has a crop factor of 1.3X. If you have "digital only" lenses and not full format lenses, you could have some problems with vignetting. Check the specs on your lenses and see if they are limited to the smaller sensor or if they are okay with the slightly larger 1D sensor.
