Is there a digital camera comparable to the Nikon D3 but less expensive?

I am attending an art school for photography and need a really good digital, but the Nikon D3 which they encourage is way out of my price range--come on, I'm a student!! Is there anything nearly as good but less expensive?

I have to scratch my head and wonder why a school would want a student starting out in photography to go out and buy one of the industry's top end cameras?!?!? As an art director in a communications firm, we successfully produce photography with much more moderate equipment.

I can recommend Nikon D200 and D80 bodies as very cost-effective platforms to start with. They have more features than most photographers will ever use. The D300 is a fairly recent addition and exceeds the capabilities of the D200. What's more important for your needs is to spend the money on what's really critical... the glass on the front of the camera. Don't be talked into buying consumer grade "super" zooms and budget lenses. Do your homework here and find good quality prime lenses whenever possible. Once you've got the process and techniques down, then you can move up to a high-end body and take the lenses with you.

What is the quality difference between the Canon 50D and the Nikon D3?

I'm trying to find the quality difference between the Canon 50D and the Nikon D3. (NOT the Nikon D300) I know there's about a $3,000 price difference between the two cameras. I just want to see some kind of comparison between the two. All I can find is the 50D vs the D300, and that's not what I want.

the D3 is Full Frame

Nikon

Which Camera would be best for professional photography Nikon D3 or Fine Pix ProS 5 ?

It would be good if someone can provide me with a comparison between Nikon D3 and Fine Pix ProS 5 or other camera's in this price range.

Well you are comparing "Gravel to Stones" two different types of cameras. The Fujifilm one should be compared to the Nikon D300. Since the body is basically the same. The difference would be the sensors. Comparing the D3 to the Fine Pix, well D3 has full frame sensor. Looking at the D300 to D3, I personally went with D300, because I can get 3 for the price of one D3. It's the nearly the same for the S5. You can get three for the price of D3. D3 only shoots one more frame per second than the D300, but it shoots 3 more compared to the Fuji S5.

In summary if it's price, get the D300 over a S5, but if you can afford it go D3. D300 is great at higher ISO's, and personally I don't think anything can compare to it overall right now. I realize D3 does have the full frame sensor, but that doesn't necessarily mean much to most. Also to note, the Fuji will be using same lenses as the D300.

Last note, don't go Canon because someone who is too stubborn to switch tells you that you should.

Nikon D3X 24.5MP FX CMOS Digital SLR with 3.0-Inch LCD (Body Only)
Nikon

3-inch super-density 920,000-dot VGA LCD monitor; 100 percent viewfinder coverage
Nikon EXPEED image processing technologies; 138 MB processed NEF (RAW) 12 or 14-bit image files
Two Live View shooting modes; continuous shooting at up to 5 fps at full FX-format resolution

Is the Nikon D3 good for basic photography or just sports?

I'm shooting with a D80 right now and I understand the leap that is the D3. However, I want to shoot full-frame images and this is really my only option. I've been told by some photographers that the D3 is just a sports camera and will be useless for studio /outdoor artistic shots. What do you guys say?

That's ridiculous, the D3 can be used for whatever you want it for. Just choose the lens that fits what you are shooting and you are good to go.

What is the recommended flashgun for the Nikon D3?

I own the D3 and I have recently got into professional photography i have a job coming up and was wondering what flashgun is recommended for the D3 as i have just moved over from Canon.

SB800, SB600, or SB400 will work and you'll have full iTTL functionality.

Older Nikon flash guns as well as other 3rd party flash guns
(Metz, etc.) will also work but you won't have full iTTL feature set.

Additionally you can 'probably' also use the Nikon Macro flash (R1, R1 C1) systems but you should check directly with Nikon for that.

  • Nikon D3/D3s Graduated and Neutral Density Presets Available ...

Aperture provides a ton of great adjustment tools, but one thing that’s tough to do is to make adjustments that simulate linear and graduated density filters that were so popular in the days of film.

We’ve figured out a way to do this, but the process is a bit complicated. We’ve simplified it for you by making presets for sets of both Graduated Density and Neutral Density Filters.

This Preset collection is for the Nikon D3X. These presets can be used on images from different cameras, but since the sensor sizes vary, the adjustments will not line up correctly with other models.

Instructions to install and use these plug-ins are available in the download file.
