A good friend who is a photographer highly recommended the Nikon D40 camera, and other reviews online seem to be good, as well. I really enjoy taking pictures, and I'm ready to take it to the next level, and I'm wondering if this is a good camera to use to do that?
The D40 is a good, basic entry-level DSLR - but its been discontinued. Its a 3 yr. old design with the limitations you'd expect from a camera that is technologically out of date.
You can find new, 2009 models from Sony, Pentax, Canon, Olympus and Nikon for about the same price.
I suggest reading reviews/comparisons of every DSLR in your price range and then making a decision. Check at http://www.dpreview.com

I was offered a good deal ($150) for a friend's Nikon D40 camera. It's in very good condition. Do you think this is a good deal? Is this a good camera?
If the camera is working fine then it's a very good deal. If the kit lens is included in the deal then it's even better.
This is one of the most recommended camera from Nikon for starters.
Price: $20.50
Also used as replacement or spare for Nikon Coolpix 8400 and 8800
Slim wireless remote instantly triggers shutter without disturbing camera

I want to buy a Nikon D40 camera, and my dad owns a Nikon D300, so I was wondering if I had to buy my own charger or if I could just use his, at least for now?
If you buy the D40 kit, it comes with one lens, (probably the 18-55mm VR lens), a battery, a battery charger, a strap, all cords needed for viewing on TV or downloading to Computer, a disc for programs to download. You may have to purchase a card for the camera...depends on where you purchase it. Here, the D40 kit sells for about 450.00 or less. A full manual in several languages comes with the camera. Good luck.
my screen for my nikon d40 cracked, but there was no effect on the inside of the screen, i can see everything clearly its just the screen cracked. whats an estimate on how much it cost to get it fixed.
Take it to a local camera shop. If they cant fix it they can recommend someone local that can.
Looking for info or opinions on the Nikon D40 camera. I am a beginner photographer, and I am interested in photographing wildlife at a distance. Is this a good choice to go with? I wanted a camera that I can change lenses on that would take long range photo's of deer and such. Is this camera capable? Again, I am a beginner
Thanks
While the entry level Nikon D40 DSLR is an excellent camera and is quite inexpensive, the lenses you will need to shoot wildlife will cost you a minimum of $480 (70-300 mm) up to over $9,000 for the 600 mm f/4, used by most working wildlife pros

You can see that George Lepp uses a 600 mm with his Canon system. Nikon and Canon have pretty much the same focal lengths. Nikon has a 200-400 mm f/4 ($5,500) that has become popular over the years with both wildlife and sports photographers

Nikon D40 DSLR – Easy To Use Entry Level DSLR | Bird Watching Advice
People have varied reasons as to why they choose a particular model of digital camera. A large number of people consider size and portability. They do not take the time to think about the performance and other functions that a camera does. The following article reviews the Nikon D40 so you know whether it’s the camera you are looking for.
When compared with other cameras in this category or range the Nikon D40 is very compact and has good optical image resolution. It comes with a 6.1 mega pixels sensor and the lens is interchangeable so you don’t have to worry about shots being out of focus as a result of zooming in and out. Considering all the functions that are put into it; this is one of the lightest cameras. The only downside of the Nikon D40 is that it can only auto focus with the AF-I and the AF-S lens and with the other types you have to focus manully. This restricts you on the number of lens thatbcan be used with it.
The D40 also has programmable auto ISO, delayed shatter and in camera retouching. For the moments when you cannot get close to the subject that you want to photograph, for example as in sporting events you can consider buying the Nikon 18-200mm VR lens. It is designed to have extra zoom range.
