I am planning on purchasing the Nikon D40. It's my first SLR carmera and I plan to use it on trips around the world (you might only go once so might as well take good pictures). I only want to take pics of landscape and architecture and hopefully only have to buy one lens instead of having to keep switching lenses. What would you recommend?
I spent some time this summer touring China with my D70 and the only lens I brought was my Nikon 18-200mm VR. The 18mm gave a fairly good wide-angle (though you might want a wider one in some scenic situations) and the 200mm did a great job of bringing in details from temples and other sights.
The best feature was the VR (Vibration Reduction) which virtually eliminated the need for a tripod.

Here are some images shot with a D40 and the same lens.

I hope this helps.

I have a Nikon D40 and I have a 75-300mm lens for it. If I get a Nikon D90, would the lens for the D40 work on there?
Yes, if it works on your D40 it will also work on a D90.
The D90 can use all of the same lenses and more. The D40 is a bit picky about which lenses it will auto-focus with (only the AF-I and AF-S ones). The D90 will auto-focus with anything that has AF in the name. Other than that they use the same lens mount, they have the same crop factor... everything else is the same as far as lenses are concerned.
It's just one little improvement out of many. The D90 is a very nice camera and I'm sure you'll enjoy the upgrade.

So, I just noticed that my lens is making a sqeaking noise, it's in fine condition, i bought it about 2 months ago, and it's just the lens that came with the kit, what is this? I seems to be working fine, but it's just making a squeaking noise.
It makes it during autofocus.
No abuse, it hasn't come in contact with water sand or anything, it's always kept in its case when i'm not using it.
Hey, that happened to me too!
I don't know exactly what fixed it, but make sure it's in autofocus and in auto mode. Then turn it off for a few minutes. If it still doesn't work, switch some things around and make it ultimately end up all auto and then turn it on and off again. That's pretty much how I fixed it and it worked haha.

i want to buy a nikon d40x but i can only find the body. my friend is willing to lend me her d40 lens but we don't know if it's compatible
Any nikon lens made since 1977-ish is directly compatible with all Nikon SLR's. From 1959-1976, you'd need to contact someone to replace the aperture ring/ another small adjustment.
I have a Nikon D40 and I am looking to upgrade, but I was curious if the extra lenses I have for my D40 will fit the D90?! Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!
Yes,all lens for D40 can go with D90

Go with a Canon XT or XTi off ebay through a reliable vendor. You can get it for about the same price or less with better specs. I personally like Canon's better for severe weather photography because of the better 'fast action' response from the camera. Nikon is a better camera I've noticed for lightning shots however, but 8mp vs. 6mp is better and the EF lens series is compatible with some higher end video cameras as well.
