Nikon D40x?
The Rainbow Ochre of Roussillon

I'm really getting into photography, it's one of my biggest hobbies. Unfortunately I'm still stuck with an old camera, I'm considering getting the Nikon D40x, I've heard mostly good things about it, and its within my price range. Just wondering if anyone has any input on this camera, good or bad. Or if anyone has any other reccomendations.

The Nikon D40 and D40x are fantastic cameras.

Ken Rockwell recommends the D40 over the more expensive D40x.

What life is there after the Nikon D40x?
Untitled

In the next week or so, I have been planning to purchase the Nikon D40x. However, in my researches, I have been reading that Nikon has stopped production of the D40x, as of December 2007.

I was wondering if anyone knows what is to come next? Should I continue on my road of purchasing the D40x, or wait to see what comes next?

I don't have specific information about the D40x, but I wouldn't buy any camera that had stopped production without a serious discount, like 1/3 off.

Plus the D40x has never been that popular. The D40 does everything that it can do, for much cheaper.

What does the r11 button mean on my nikon d40x camera?
Untitled

I have a Nikon D40x. In the viewfinder at the bottom of the screen it has [r11] message appearing. I don't know if it is an error message for lighting. It doesn't also let me actually take the picture. What is up with that? I'm confused and the manual doesn't explain it. Help!

The little "r" number lets you know how many more photos you can take in a row before you have to let the camera catch up, writing image files to your memory card that have been placed in the cameras buffer.

My old D100's buffer is so small, the highest "r" on it is 3.

You can watch it work by shooting as fast as you can and watch the "r" number get smaller and smaller until it reaches 0. You will see how it all works.

Nikon's smallest 10.2 megapixel digital SLR ever - Beautifully styled and compact, the D40X makes using a digital SLR camera easier and more convenient than ever. The most compact Nikon 10.2-megapixel digital SLR ever, the D40X fits the hand perfectly, with a well-balanced design and grip to ensure easy access to controls.
Extraordinary Nikon image quality - The D40X offers high-resolution image capture, made possible by exclusive algorithms incorporated into the Nikon Image Processing Engine.
Fast startup and instant shutter response - The D40X offers a power-up time of a mere 0.18 seconds and a near instant shutter response. Super-fast shutter response allows decisive moments to be captured perfectly, without annoying shutter lag.

What are the differences between the Nikon D40 and the Nikon D40X?
Untitled

I am going to buy a Nikon camera, but I'm torn between purchasing the Nikon D40 or the Nikon D40X. I know that the D40X is $200 dollars more than the D40. Is it worth it? What are the other differences? If possible, please show your source.

For the extra money, the D40x gives you:

10 MP sensor (vs 6 MP)
100 ISO lowest sensitivity (vs 200 ISO)
1/500 second flash synchronization (vs 1/200 second)

In my opinion, for a new photographer, the D40x is not worth the extra money. That extra $200 is far better spend towards a second lens.

Can anyone recommend a good telescope to purchase and use along with my Nikon D40x digital slr camera?
Untitled

I recently used my Nikon D40x digital slr camera to take some photos of the full moon with a 200mm telephoto. After that experience, I am interested in purchasing a telescope that I can use along with my Nikon D40x to take even better photos of the moon and other night sky bodies. Can anyone recommend a good telescope that would be good for this purpose. I would prefer to spend well under $1000 for any telescope and gear. Thanks.

  • Flash for Nikon D40X - Steve's Digicams Forums

I have the above camera with a 18-200 VR. I have never used an external flash and know nothing about them. I prefer nature photos to portraits or family/qroup shots. Santa is asking for a list. Should I be thinking about using an external flash and what would you recommend. I thought I read that when using an external at least the SB400 that the camera has to be in manual mode. If this is the case I should probably spend the money on camera lessons before Santa invests in a flash Another advantage (in addition to being more powerful and offering tilt and swivel) of the SB-600 is that it supports High Speed Sync (a.k.a., FP mode). That allows you to use the flash for fill outdoors in brighter lighting at wider apertures at any shutter speed supported by the camera. With the SB-400, on your D40x, you'd be limited to a fastest shutter speed of 1/200 second (your camera's x-sync speed), which could be limiting.
