I want to get something a little better than the kit 18-55 vr lens that the Nikon D5000 comes with. I'd rather buy the body only and get something that is an all around lens but a little faster than f3.5 for low light. Would the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 HSM be a good choice?
Nikon 35mm f/1.8 AF-S. (note this is a very popular lens and demand is much higher than the rate Nikon makes them, so it is out of stock most of the time)

Also, just get the 18-55 as an all-around lens in good light.
Getting both of those is cheaper than the 17-70.
The Sigma is pointless since it's only half a stop faster than the 18-55 but loses image stabilization, not to mention it's third party. The 35 prime is 1-1/2 to over 4 stops faster than the 18-55.

I have been extensively researching DSLR cameras because I have decided to buy my first one. I decided on the Nikon D5000 because it will suit my needs as a beginner but will allow me to grow. I normally shoot indoors in low lighting, but will shoot outside more and take more portrait shots with a nicer camera. I also like macro shots, but not enough to purchase a macro lens at this time. I found this great lens (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-35mm-AF-S-Di gital-Cameras/dp/B001S2PPT0/ref=cm_cr_pr _product_top), a Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens, that sounds perfect for a lot of what I take pictures of, but with its $200 price tag (which I understand is reasonable for a lens, if even very inexpensive) I am contemplating using this as my only lens instead of getting the kit which includes the body and the 18-55mm VR lens. Would you recommend I buy both or just stick with one or another? I love the image quality that the 35mm produces, but since I am a beginner, perhaps I should wait. What do you suggest?
I think you'll be happier with the 18-55 kit lens. It has fairly good optics. For general shooting it's much nicer to have a zoom lens. It does suffer in low light conditions which means you need to use a flash. You can use the 18-55 for portrait work at the 55mm setting, except, the minimum f-stop isn't low enough to have good control over depth of field like a fast prime (fixed focal length) lens.
I have the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S lens which is a very nice lens. I use it primarily for low light shooting without flash for stage shows, dance venues, and parties. If you can afford it, it's a nice addition to your lens collection. The 35mm lens is a bit short for portraits, however, my friend has used mine for party portrait pics (half body shots) with nice results. For portraits, you would be better off with a 50 or 85mm lens.
Suggestion, get the camera with the 18-55mm kit lens. Shoot with it for 6 months and then make a decision on what focal length you would like to get for a prime lens.

Do I have to buy additional lens?

Does anyone have any other recommendations?
I am completely new to DSLRs and I'm really interested in buying the Nikon D5000.
Thank you for your time!
Ok, I get the idea now, thanks for answering.
However, I have another question, should I buy the Nikon D3000 kit that comes with 18-55mm VR Lens & 55-200mm DX Lens for about $650 or the Nikon D5000 kit that ONLY comes with 18-55mm VR Lens for $700.
I'm really stuck between both...it's so frustrating!
I want the D5000 because it films but the D3000 kit is an amazing deal...so idk which I should get.
Any help is appreciated :)
You need a lens to take a picture. The D5000 can be purchased as a kit with a 18-55mm lens. However, buying the body-only can be worthwhile if you want a different lens. Buying a D5000 body and buying an 18-105mm lens could be a good choice.
Removable shoulder strap for convenient travel!!!
Exterior compartment allows you to carry accessories such memory card, batteries, and chargers!!!
Unique flip-out design!!!
im gonna get the nikon d5000 and im wondering if i should get the body only and buy the 55-200mm lens or if the 18-55mm lens , should i get the 18-55 or 55-200 money is not an issue
If you buy the body only, buy the 18-200 mm VR lens.
You need the 18-55 focal range to shoot landscapes, groups and head and shoulder portraits. The 55-200 mm is used for head and shoulder portraits to sports, action and some wildlife.
By buying one lens that covers both shooting situations, you can spend less time changing lenses and more time shooting
I am looking for some expert help on which camera to buy.
I saved money for an year to get a nice DSLR and dont want to disappoint myself. I have $900 with me
Should i buy the KIT? or the body + lens?
Which lens is good?
I am really looking for some serious help only please.
As per my research on these models, i see both have pros and cons, but i am not able to prioritize these drawbacks.
All i am looking for is Widest angle coverage (without barrel distortion), versatility in operation and great pictures as compared to my point and shoot.
Please also include suggestion on maintenance and compatibility with multiple lenses too. (if i buy any in the future)
Thanks.
Arun
Hello Photoace,
Thanks for the nice answer.
But you did not mention which cam u are talking about.
The $550 one.
Which make and model is it?
Sorry
Got the info.
My page did not open correctly.
Both are fine cameras
The kit lens (18-55 mm) is a good start and will be enough for you to use until you have mastered the camera and its features. Buying the body and lens(es) as a kit will give you the best value.
You will have to decide which camera is best for you based upon 1) the features of each and 2) which one is the easiest for you to use. This will require you actually visiting a camera store and holding both in your hands.
That said, you may want to consider this camera. For under $550, you will get an excellent camera with two lenses (18-55 mm and 55-200 mm) that will give you just that much more rage in the subjects you shoot. Since it may take you over three years to fully master your first DSLR, buying the latest and greatest camera might be premature. After all, with even the most simple, entry level DSLR, it can take years to learn how to use it and its features. Buy the time you are ready for a technically more sophisticate camera body for less money.

The widest angle lens available is either the 10-24 mm or 12=24 mm lens.
The 12-24 mm lens will have the least barrel distortion of the two
