How do I auto focus Nikon AF-D lenses on D5000 DSLR?
Looking back

Is there a way for me to use a converter that auto-focuses AF-D to AF-S (DX) format DSLR's like the Nikon D5000?
I was thinking of buying AF 85mm f1.8 lens, but it does not autofocus on my Nikon D5000.

Also, are there tele-converters that have internal focus motor and image stabilizer built in to them that works on Nikon D5000? Thanks.

D5000 can only handle AF-S lenses with the focus motor in the lens. You would need to use this as a manual focus lens on the D5000. If you had a D90, you could use this lens with full auto focus capability.

I am going to buy a new dslr Nikon d5000 do I need a new lens?
Paper stars

I have a tamaron 28-300 since the sensor is film sized do I need a new lens?I shoot bikes in action so I need something in this range.

Tamron lens is 18-270 with VR system. Performs same as Nikon 18-200VR and is cheaper. Note that your Tamron lens works fine on a D5000 but the start point of 28 is somewhat too long since it makes 40 mm in film size and that will not make you happy. I suggest to buy the new 10-24 from Nikon as a wide angle complement or a Tokina 12-24 which is a huge lens. If you can afford it go for the 17-55/2.8 from Nikon.

how to work an InfraRed filter with a DSLR Nikon D5000?
husband

i have an IR720 filter which i have tried with my Nikon D5000. Every attempt results in failure. does the D5000 CCD sensor have an IR blocker which must be removed (modded)?

i have also tried long exposures on a tripod (roughly 1-2 exposure) and i still get nothing.

Two options

1) send your camera in and have the IR filter removed off its sensor.
2) take really long exposures since your IR720 blocks most visible light and the built in IR filter blocks most IR light. I've read that some people go this route as it's just a bit of a hassle but you still have a useable camera for regular photography.

Either way you'll need to focus manually adjusting for the IR spectrum shift. Your lens should have an IR alignment notch. Many don't these days.

Canon EOS 500D, Nikon D5000 Double Kit DSLR OR Nikon D90 Kit DSLR?
Logicistics

Which one is the best??? Any suggestions...

The Nikon D90 and the D5000 take pictures of the same quality because they share much of the internal components between them. The main difference between the two is that the D90 has the auto focus motor built into the body whereas the D5000 does not, and of course the D90 has higher component specs and features. The first two links are a great review of the D90 and D5000.

The best prices I could find for the D90 are from camerakings.com. $865.00 for the body only, $974.00 with Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX ED II Lens, $1,109.00 with Nikon 18-105mm VR Lens, and $1,137.00 with Nikon 18-55mm AF-S DX ED II & 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 AF-S DX Lens.

The best prices I could find for the D5000 are from camerakings.com. $619.00 for the body only, $719.00 with Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX ED II Lens, $909.00 with Nikon with Nikon 18-55mm AF-S DX ED II & 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 AF-S DX Lens and $1,393.00 with Nikon 18-105mm VR & 70-300 VR AF-S Lens.

Another option is to purchase the D90 body ($865.00) or D5000 body ($619.00) and purchase a third party lens like the Tamron Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Lens for $254.00 with $60.00 mail in rebate (one of the best deals available right now, unfortunately it does not have (VC) vibration compensation, but for the price you will not find a better deal on a lens like this) or a Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di-II VC LD Asph. AF Macro Lens for $549.99 with a $70.00 mail in rebate (this lens has VC and longer focal length but cost more than double the 18-200mm lens). The mail in rebates for the Tamron lenses are good until the end of December. All the prices I quoted include free shipping from camerakings.com.

One of the main reasons I prefer the Nikon's over the Canon's and Sony's is that they have a separate auto focus assist lamp built into the body (on all models) whereas the Canon and Sony use their flash to perform this function. In certain situations, using the flash as a AF assist lamp can interfere with your shot. I am surprised that Canon and Sony still use flash for AF assist on their lower end models because on their upper end models they have separate AF assist lamps.

If you decide to use older 35mm film lenses, the thing you have to remember about using older 35mm lenses with the D90 or D5000 is that you have to multiply the focal lenght by 1.5 because the sensor is smaller than the original 35mm film. What this means is that your 18-200mm lens on the D90 would become a 27-300mm lens. Check out second link for a compatibility chart of Nikon lenses and bodies.

You can't really go wrong with either camera because they have the same picture quality. I know it is a hard choice but if you can afford it I'd go with the D90 instead. Take a look at the links below for more information and where to purchase.

  • Nikon D5000 DSLR Review - PCSTATS.com

Consumer DSLRs with HD video capabilities are becoming more and more prevalent these days. As a result, manufacturers are constantly battling to find ways to differentiate themselves and their products from the others. Nikon's D5000 offers a few features that help set it apart from other options in the company's line as well as from the models offered by other manufacturers. Like many DSLRs today, the D5000 offers Live View mode. It also has HD movie recording capabilities with the ability to capture up to 720p HD video at 24fps. While some cameras such as the Canon EOS Rebel T1i focus on a large, high-resolution display on the back of the camera, Nikon has gone a slightly different route and has opted to feature an articulating screen on the back of the D5000...
