I am new at photography I am planning on start photography school in sept. specializing in wedding, portraits.. I am looking for 1 lens that will be an all around good lens for the nikon d5000 i have the 18-55 now please help
For what you plan on doing I would go for the 24-70mm F2.8. It is not a cheap lens by any stretch of the imagination but it is the most common lens for wedding photography. If you can swing it you might as well get it. Cost is about $1,500.
Other than that I would stick with what you have or maybe add a telephoto zoom like a 55-200mm $250. If you just happen to be loaded you can always buy the second most popular wedding lens too. It is the 70-200mm F2.8 VR. Cost is about $1,900.
That Nikon Guy (Matt Granger) reviews the Nikon D5000 and the 55-200mm VR kit lens. Hands on review featuring ISO test, and in the field shooting ...
The lens is 18-55mm it says, so can I buy any lens filter from 18mm to 55mm? Or does it have to be 18-55mm ?
Like, can I buy a 53mm lens filter for that lens?
Look on your lens: there will be a symbol that looks like a circle with a diagonal line thru it. This is your filter thread size. (Ex: "symbol" 52 or 52mm) From there, just look for filters of that size. Each lens will, or at least can, have a different filter size, so don't expect a one size fits all kind of thing if you eventually plan on buying more lenses. 52, 55, 62 and 72mm are all fairly common sizes.

i just got a Nikon d5000 but i cant use my old lens it just says that there isn't a lens attached how do i fix this problem? i don't have the money to get a better camera.
It's normal. You mount it on your camera like any other Nikkor lens. Non/Pre AI lens will not harm D5000 body.
You just have to shoot everything in manual mode. It will not auto focus and it will not meter.
You will either have to use sunny 16 rule or use an external light meter, and ignore the message about there's no lens, because the camera body don't know what lens you're using on it.
You don't have to get a better camera, D5000 is probably the *best* camera you can use a Non AI lens on, all other better cameras will be spoiled if you try to use that lens.

hi , im going to africa this year and im going to be buying a nikon d5000 before i go. i will also be buying a nikkor 55 - 200 mm afs lens.
my question is - ok well for a start this lens do not have VR !
do you think i would still get a clear shot out of a jeep say (a moving jeep, when im taking pictures of the animals ) , in alright lighting, using a faster shutter speed?
or would it just be a blurry mess ? ...
If you are hand holding, your shutter speed should be 1/300 seconds or faster at 200mm. Out of a moving vehicle, forget it unless you can shoot faster than 1/800 sec.
If you're going after wildlife, 200mm may come up a bit short. Consider getting something like the Sigma 150-500mm (has VR) or the 50-500mm (no VR). This is probably one of those once in a lifetime trips, so make the best of it with a longer lens.

A tripod and remote for the camera are good things to have. The remote will allow you to operate the shutter without touching the camera. This reduces shake.
I bought a Nikon D5000 recently with the current kit lens which is the 18-55mm lens. Now I'm planning to buy another lens. Among all the lenses, which one is the most useful for portrait and landscape? Thanks!
For portrait AND landscape I'd get the 18-105mm or 18-135mm. They're wide enough to shoot landscape, although at 18mm they like to get a little dark in the corners, and clear enough to shoot portraits. They're not the fastest lenses on earth by any stretch, but you can get it all in one lens and they're both excellent for picture clarity and not real pricey. The 18-70mm is also a nice medium lens that's not too pricey. Not to assume too much, if you have a D5000 I'm not thinking you're looking at putting $1800 glass in front of it.

Which Is A Better Camera For Gcse Photography The Nikon D5000 Or ...
I have been searching for a camera for a while and these are what I got it down to. I am looking to use it for GCSE photography. It would also help if you could say which was better in different categories and overall which would be better to use in GCSE photography. Also feel free to talk about any other cameras around this price range that you think are worth mentioning.
