How do you make a light painting with a Nikon d60 camera?
Rolleicord II Model 1 - Model K3

I was just wondering how to make a light painting with a Nikon d60, I have little camera experience and do not know much about cameras, so you might have to walk me through it a little.

You need a few things first.

-Tripod
-Remote (optional)
-Camera & Lens
-Light Source (be creative here)
-Night Time or a very dark room/studio.

Set the camera up on the tripod and point in a direction where there is very little light. I would suggest tunnels, underpasses, etc. Just as long as it is dark, it will work. Set the camera up so you can take an extend exposure. I usually use the manual mode. For the first time, just take 30 sec exposures. You'll want the aperture to be about f/5.6 but you can use f/8 or smaller if you care to do so.

You can use the remote to set off the shutter or just press it yourself. I would suggest using the timer function so you can get to wear you want to start by the time the shutter opens. Once the shutter is open, use your light source to do whatever you want. Make shapes, lines, letters, numbers, paths, whatever. Experimenting is important. Be creative and search out other light painters (flickr is a good place to start).

Good light sources are LEDs, flash lights, sparklers, fireworks (be safe of course), glowsticks, etc.

What lenses to use with a Nikon D60 camera?
Rolleicord II Model 1 - Model K3

Can the D60 digital camera use any older Nikkor lens from the film cameras? If so, is the aperture ring functional or does the camera meter the light automatically?
What I mean is, what older lenses will use the full-functionality of the D60 features, and what type are simply compatible but may not have auto-focus or some other capability? I see lots of older Nikon lenses on ebay for $100 or less but not sure if they are a good option.

Nearly all Nikon lenses made in the last 50 years are compatible with the D60. The only ones which will not work are early non-retrofocus-style wideangles and "IX" lenses for their short lived APS film SLRs, as these lenses would penetrate too far into the mirror box.

Now the D60 doesn't have the proper couplings for AI metering. So in order to use the built in light meter you'll need lenses that are equipped with a Matrix Metering CPU. This includes all varieties of "AF" lenses as well as AI-p models. Furthermore this body doesn't have a built in motor like older (or higher end) Nikons, and so instead the autofocus system relies on a dedicated motor built into the lens itself. Either "AF-I" or "AF-S", or a third party equivalent like Sigma's "HSM".

For lenses that support light metering you must always set the aperture on the body; It will not let you use the light meter if the ring on the lens is set to anything other than the smallest aperture setting.

What is the next lens I should buy for my new Nikon D60 camera?
Bell & Howell 624

I have the free 18-55 VR AF Lens you get with the D60 but I need another lens for the camera to reach its full potential compered to silly little point and shoot cameras..
What is a good 2nd lens to buy...
I was thinking 55-200 VR AF
Thank you for your answers.

Nikon makes awesome lenses. Sigma does some pretty good ones too. If you really want to dig deeper, visit this forum on dpreview.com:

A question about a Nikon D60 SLR camera?
KODAK Single-use camera WATERPROOF

Is there a way that you can set a Nikon D60 camera so it will do black and white photos?

Also this might sound real stupid but I am not sure. Is there a way to set the screen so you don't look in the eye hole but you look at the screen and see the same if you would look through the eye hole?
What and where can i find the editing tools within the camera?

Hi i am a freelance photographer in my town and work for two newspapers. I use a similar Nikon d90 for my work. My suggestion to you would be to take all of your photographs in color then later use a simple program to change them to black and white. The reason for this is because if you ever need to view or want to see the photo in color you will have the file.
If you must shoot in black and white just choose "monochrome" from the shooting menu. (monochrome means b&w it took me a few books to figure it out)

What should I use to clean lcd monitor on my nikon d60 camera with or would a protective film be better?
