How can I tell the difference between Nikon FX Lenses and Nikon DX lenses?

Yesterday I upgraded from the Nikon D300 to the Nikon D700, body only. The guy at the camera store told me that my D300 lenses wouldn't work on the D700 at full resolution. Therefore, I need lenses. I read that Nikon has been making FX lenses for years but the camera store is telling me that I need to buy 2 and 3 thousand dollar lenses.

I already have a 50mm 1.4, but I want a good wide angle zoom lens. I was cruising Craig's List, but just want to know before I buy what writing am I looking for on the lens to know it will give me full resolution.

The guy at the store really put it in a negative way.

What the D700 (and D3(x)) does is crop the sensor and shows that crop in the screen allowing you to use all your DX lenses on your full frame Nikon DSLR. Canon EF-S lenses cannot be used at all on full frame Canon cameras ... period ... they will cause damage to the cameras mirror.

The guy at the store is just trying to make money.

Any Nikon AF lens will perform well on your camera,

Have you actually tested your D700 using a DX lens .. I think you will find that the guy at the camera store is probably not a Nikon supporter and is very quick to point out what he thinks is a failure of the Nikon system ... in reality, it is a strength ... at least with a Nikon, you can use the DX lenses. Not so with Canon.

Here is a list of all the Nikon lenses and their compatibilities with Nikon cameras.

Some sale people like to point out that entry level Nikon's only use AF-S lenses ... AF-S lenses are what Nikon is currently making and as time goes on, they will all be AF-S lenses but for the specialty lenses like manual focus and PC lenses.

I have five current Nikon Zoom lenses ... two are DX, the 18-200 mm VR and 12-24 mm. They work just fine on my D3. My four prime lenses all cover my full frame cameras, 35 mm and D3

Nikon D700 Review

Slotting in between the D300 and D3 in the Nikon range, the D700 is more closely related to the D3. It packs in the same groundbreaking full-frame ...

Lenses for the FX Nikon D700?

What other lenses are compatible with the D700 full frame sensor? Right now I only have the Nikkor 24-120mm for it.

I have other lenses for my other bodies, but I really don't want to use DX lenses on an FX sensor.

Any of the Nikon lenses that do not have a "DX" notation on them are full frame lenses and are designed to work on any Nikon 35 mm SLR or FX Digital SLR

Are Nikon DSLR users annoyed?

We hear all this talk of Nikon leading the way with the D3 and D700 blah blah blah.

I just wonder if the nikon users are annoyed when they put a DX lens on their nice new bodies and only get 5MP?

Do they ever wish they had bought canon instead? (Highest res DSLR with the EOS 1Ds Mk3, highest burst rate with the EOS 1D mk3? a 15MP camera with either digital or EF lenses for less than the D700?)

Don't think I hadn't noticed that photoace had ignored the 10fps 100f depth of the EOS 1D Mk3.
Don't matter much. I only asked so to wind up Nikon afficianados who were being very smug over the last while, getting the headlines for catching up at last.
Nothing against Nikon as they make nice cameras. Just not as good as Canons.
And for the person who made the point about the F mount not changing for 50 years...
thats why canon have the faster better Af system and have had for the last 20 years. AND a 50 yo lens is going to be so badly coated at source and by wear and tear since that the kindest thing to do would be use it as a paper weight.
Show me somebody who is using a 50yo lens on a d700 or D3 and i'll show you somebody who is as well using a DX lens with clingfilm over the front element.

As per the EFs comments: I agree. But even even canon EFs users stil lget up to 15MP, ha ha ha.

The Canon pro users who only ever bought EF anyway get up to 22MP.

Canon wins.
