nikon d80?

okay, I just got a new camera (nikon d80)
it is my FIRST digital SLR and I'm confused about the aperture and shutter speed settings

whenever I put the camera on aperture priority, shutter priority, OR manual, whenever I set the shutter speed over 1/40 it under exposes..same thing with aperture...if I set that over about a f4 it under exposes...any tips on how to set them higher without under exposing??

To avoid over exposure, use the aperture priority mode and adjust the aperture until the shutter speed is at least 1/250 of a second, so you don't get camera movement.

Next take a class in photography ... you have a VERY good camera with is totally adjustable, so knowing what you are doing is very important in order to get the photos you want.

If you are still having problems, just go ahead and put the camera in the "P" program mode. That will assure your photos are the best they can be under most shooting conditions until you have taken some classes.

Nikon D80?

I just recently purchased a Nikon D80 and I'm trying to find a case for it, but most that I find at wolf camera aren't really that discreet. I'd like for it to be more of a purse or a tote case, if anyone can point me in the right directions I'd be really thankful.

If you don't like what Wal-mart or Target have you can check out www.samys.com They have and awesome website with all kinds of photog equipment and accessrires. They also have manufact. rebates. If you're in the L.A. area, stop by the store (Samy's Camera) and check out their stuff yourself.

Nikon D80 ??

I am doing research on getting a Nikon D80, I want something thats going to last me and at the same time not go out of style. Well, as far as the lenses I do want to get a nice one,the Nikon DX is what I am trying to get. Do you recommend getting a 88-55 and a 70 -300??? Is one lense good enough or getting two better? Where on the internet can I find all this stuff, camera, etc... for a great price????/

Personally I'm a canon guy so I can't give you much advice on the D80 but I can speak for the lenses. I'll assume you meant the 18-55mm because there is no 88-55mm.

I think Nikon's are 1.5x factor so an 18-55 is considered a decently wide angle at 18mm and a pretty good portrait lens at 55mm. I think this lens is the best startup lens you can get that is versatile enough for day to day stuff, from scenic to portrait.

As for the 70-300, that's a telephoto zoom lens, 70mm at 1.5x is really the equivalent of 105mm on a 35mm camera, so you can barely use it as a portrait lens but it is mainly intended for long range photography, for example like when you go to the zoo and want a photo of the tiger's face.

You can also use the 70-300 as a macro lens (although it isn't really macro.) Macro is when you take a photo of a flower up close, or a bee on top of a flower etc. If you want to do that a lot, you're better off getting a macro lens. If you want to do that occasionally then you can use the 70-300 but make sure the minimum focal distance is acceptable. 4.5 feet is about average for this type of lens, better lenses will have shorter distances gradually as you go into macro lense when you can be 18 inches away from your subject.

In short 18-55 I recommend. use it for scenic shots, group shots, and also portrait shots of people.

70-300 is generally for long range photography, nature, possibly macro, sports photography etc. Can also be used for portraits but at some distance, like some modeling shots.

Where to buy? Amazon.com is usually where the best deals on cameras are. Word of advice, do not buy out of any site that sells out of Brooklyn. If you see a price that is too good to be true, it isn't true. There are a lot of crooks selling cameras out there. I usually buy from amazon.com "Sold by Amazon" or from onecall.com but they could be a bit expensive. Also if you have Dell coupons you can get a deal.

Good luck.

nikon d80....?

If i bought a nikon d80 .. now...

Would it still be classed as a good camera in 2-4 years time??

i am desperate for it, but i'm starting a 2year-photography course in 2 years time.. not sure whether to wait and get one then...

or buy it now.... but i don't want to have to buy a new/better one halfway through the course.....?

Will it last??

It'll be a good camera but if you start the course in 2 years I suggest you wait about 18 months to buy a new camera...no telling what will be available then and hopefully prices will have dropped drastically....

until then buy a decent CHEAP digital camera to get the feel for working with digital images and getting the most from your equipment

Is a Nikon D80 a good professional camera for businesses?

I'm considering starting my own photography studio. I have a Nikon D80- is this a good camera for studio photography? Buying another camera is out of the question, so I really need to know if this is okay or not! Also, any extra tips for the studio would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, you can use the D80 as a studio camera.

The key thing is with the D80 as a studio camera is that it lacks a PC connector to studio lamps. So you'll need to get a Nikon hot shoe to PC connector or an infrared sender to trigger your studio lights.

As for extra studio tips: invest in a flash meter. Used Minolta flash meters are available inexpensively on eBay. You can buy them new under the Kenko brand label. There's also Sekonic flash meters.

Don't skimp on the studio lights either.
