I am wondering what Nikon camera is most similar to the Olympus E3 in quality, performance and features - not concerned with the price equivalent.

Because of the smaller sensor in the E3 it is hard to say. In features I think that the Nikon D300 would be a good equivalent but most of Nikon's current DSLRs are going to have better resolution.

I do a lot of night time shoots on the olympus e3 what is the best lens available for night time shoots ?
the lense with the lowest f-stop.
the focal lenght has no bearing on night lighting except for how fast it is. a 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 is good, a 4.5 is not.
since digital cameras are good with low frequency light, if you want really low light level shots, light up the area with infrared light.

I'm not the most enlightened person on the subject of photography but I love it and I have progressively bought better and better cameras over the years. I want a professional grade camera but I'm not sure if I should go with an Olympus E3 or a Nikon D3 or what.
I'm going to be minoring in photography so I will be needing/wanting a good camera but I'd like to know which one.
THANK YOU!!!
If you are going to be "minoring in photography" probably the E3 and definitely the D3 are WAY overkill. It would be like giving a beginning piano student Tchaikovsky sheet music.
Spend less for the body, and get good lenses if you have money to burn.

I currently own an Olympus E410 and want to take the next step in photography by upgrading to a better SLR, the reason i am looking at the E3 is so I can use my current four thirds lenses rather than buy all new ones. I ask because I have read some articles suggested that the E3 isn't must better than the E410 and E510
The primary advantages of the E3 are that it is designed to be much more rugged, to have a significantly longer shutter life and with dust/water seals to allow use in harsh conditions. If, by the next step you mean you want to shoot professionally or you want to use a camera in more demanding environments, then, yes, you should get the E3. One additional benefit is that the viewfinders on the E-Series are significantly larger & brighter than on the lower end models.
You also have two other alternative cameras to look at, the Leica Digilux3 and Panasonic DMC-L10, both of which accept the 4/3 lenses. If you have acquired any of the Olympus "High Grade" or "Super High Grade" lenses you already have some stellar, world class optics and there would be little reason to change systems.
I have two E1 bodies and they are significantly better construction than my E500. Olympus has clearly mapped an upgrade path for the "Pro"/"Semi-Pro" user and are bringing out models and accessories to meet that need. Other improvements in the E3 include an improved, more versatile and faster auto-focusing system and the articulated "live view" display screen. These are features that other camera makers will copy very quickly. Olympus innovates and other companies follow along....
The one drawback I can see to the E3 is that the "Power Grip" accessory does not appear to live up to the standard that Oly set with the E1. IMO, the E1 showed a marked improvement in performance with the Power grip attached, Oly changed the battery type in the E3 to be more compatible with it's other E-Series cameras all of which use the same battery (EXCEPT for the E410 which uses a smaller lighter battery) but they seem to have lost the power boost that helped improve focusing speed and the ability to shoot hundreds of pictures without interruption. I think this will be more of a problem on the E3 because of the power consumed by "Live View".
But I suspect that either Oly or a third party will come up with a better power grip design if this is a significant problem.
So I would say, unless there is some compelling reason to do other wise, buy the E3 if you are going to be "demanding" OR another lens and an E510 so you have a "backup" camera if you think you will not need the major features of the E3.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

TVP: Olympus E-3 Successor (E-5)
Its time the Olympus E-3 hung up its shutter and gave way for a newer model. There has been an untold amount of speculation about the Olympus E-5 over the past couple of years. Many have speculated a Trine CCD array and some have suggested a mere sensor upgrade to 12.3 megapixel. Researching the rumours and gathering information about the E-5 I have come to two possible ideas. Olympus is well known for its innovative approach to camera design. Live View, articulated screens and more recently, Art Filters are just few of the features which the company has introduced to the market. The E-3 represented the pinnacle of Live View and Articulated Screens in its day. A truly innovative design which forced the major players like Nikon and Canon to take note. It wasn't until recently that these two camera giants introduced their versions of either. With this I find it difficult to believe that Olympus is settled on introducing a 12.3 megapixel flagship camera based around the same features and specifications...
