I’m planning to buy a lens for my Pentax K100super and I’m trying to decide what will be my best choice.Im completely new to SLRs so what I’m really looking for is for a better zoom, at least 10x and I was considering the 18-250mm lens, then somebody told me that I should get a 55-300mm but I guess that would have a smaller zoom right??
What will be my best choice??
THANKS!
If all things are equal, the 18-250 would probably serve a beginner better. You can crop an image shot at 250mm down to what a 300mm would have been, so you wouldnt really miss much. But if you could only go 55mm wide you'd just plain miss the 18mm range. You'd have to take two pics to get the same coverage and stitch it together in photoshop.
Neither of these lenses are "FANTASTIC" lenses if your planning on going pro (with the exception of paparazzi, image quality wont matter as long as you get the shot). Barrel distortion will make it less useful for landscapes, a non-consistant aperture will make it difficult in low light situations (just about any wedding or indoor event is a low light situation), it wont be tack sharp if you plan to print over 8x10. But if your just a casual user it should work fine.
18-250 is my vote. You may also consider the 28-300, but you'd still be missing the wider 18mm range. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/34 7536-REG/Tamron_AF061P700_28_300mm_f_3_5 _6_3_XR_Di.html
Desempaquetado de mi nueva Pentax K20D, en kit con la lente Pentax smc DA 18-250 mm
I have a Pentax K100D DSLR, with the 18-55mm kit lens that came with it. I am interested in buying an additional lens, so I would appreciate your input. My choices are a Pentax 50-200mm for $190.00 or a Pentax 18-250mm for $450. I would be using the lens for basic vacation-type and family photo shots. Is it worth the $260 difference to go with the 18-250mm vs 50-200mm lens? Thanks!
If you want a "one-lens" solution, then the 18-250mm is worth the extra money. Essentially, the lure of this lens is that when you travel, you only have to carry one lens and you don't have to switch when you need more telephoto power.
However, if you don't mind carrying around a second lens and don't mind switching lenses when needed, then saving the extra money and getting the 50-200mm lens makes sense.
In terms of image quality, you'll get slightly better quality with having two separate lenses with a more limited zoom range, but for consumer use, the difference will not be noticeable.
If you're taking basic vacation and family photo shots, I would say you should go for the one lens solution--it's just convenient and easier to work with one lens for family/casual shooting, and it's a great snapshot lens. The 50-200mm doesn't offer enough of an advantage IMHO to justify carrying two lenses around all the time when traveling, nor the hassle of having to switch lenses.
i'm looking at 3 different lenses and i dont know which one to pick. i want a lens with a good zoom (at least 200mm) but i still want a good aperture value. the lens i think that i want to get is theTamron 70-300mm F/4-5.6 becuase of its low price at $150. but i also would like the versatility of the Pentax 18-250mm F3.5-6.3. so if you know anything about these lenses or if you are in to photography and know what im talking about, please help me out. thanks.
Big difference between these lenses! One is an inexpensive telephoto zoom and the other is an all-in-one zoom that's quite expensive.
If you want a good aperture value, look for a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. It'll cost as much as the 18-250, but it'll perform much better too. Otherwise, if you just want a one-lens solution that does everything okay, but not great, the 18-250mm is about your only choice.
Hi, i have a DSLR, and i'm going to Nepal for a month. Since Nepal is not a hugely safe country, and i will be exposing my camera to risks - thieves, rain, being damaged in my pack, etc - does anyone have tips? What should i do when travelling with it? It is a Pentax k200d with an 18-250mm lens, in a camera bag. I will be trekking (Annapurnna) for approximately 10 days, will be spending time in Pokhara, Kathmandhu and other places, and will possibly be volunteering at an orphanage for a week. I am 15, and will be with a group of other young people, with three adults. I'm going in November, which is in winter i believe, but i'm unsure of the weather. I will be taking out insurance on my camera, but dont really want to have to make a claim!
Does anyone have advice? Where should i keep my camera? Are thieves likely to be a problem? What to do with it while trekking? How to protect it from weather, damage etc? And most importantly - how should i carry it? round my neck? in my pack?
1. Your camera bag should be good enough.
2. Stick with an adult at all times.

My dad has a Nikon D100 which he carries around his neck. But you should still be careful they can cut the strap around your neck to get the camera. He doesn't put everything in the same pack or camera bag. So far he's forgotten a camera on a park bench in Paris. When he returned the camera was gone but it had been turned in to a nearby store so no harm no foul. He was lucky.
Write down your name, address and phone # (at home, at hotel) in the case it is forgotten or stolen. Don't carry full memory cards in the pack that way if you get it stolen you won't lose all your memories which are priceless of coarse.
I know someone who strapped it to his belt and carries it that way. It's really up to you. It's less cumbersome on the belt, I believe.
Enjoy your trip.
