The first 645, not the N/NII.
And ignoring 6x4.5/6x6/6x7 format issues.
1) The lack of any digital back which can fit the 645, if you ever decide to upgrade to digital.
2) You cannot change backs in light. Many other medium format cameras allow you to interchange backs by inserting a slide; with the 645, there are interchangeable film backs, but you have to do it in total darkness. It's not really usable for changing the backs.
3) Someone else mentioned there's no shutters in lenses, but in fact this is incorrect. I own a 135mm leaf shutter lens, and there's also a 75mm leaf shutter lens for my Pentax 645N, and they fit the original 645.
Other than that, this is a great way to get into medium format shooting. You just need to be aware of these limitations. Generally speaking too, you need to be aware that medium format can be expensive to shoot, develop and print. This tends to make digital very attractive, because after the high initial investment, the costs drop much more.

I have an older Pentax 645 camera and bought my new *istD2 just recently. One of the reasons I purchased the *ist was because I can "supposedly" buy an adapter for the use of my old lenses. I have yet to find the adapter. Also, the internet company where I bought the camera said they didn't realize there was an adapter available.
It's back-ordered at B&H, but this is it: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controll er/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&am p;sku=40832&is=REG&addedTroughTy pe=search

Im trying to figure out if my old pentax lenses would be compatible with a new pentax SLR (i'd probably get the k100d). the lenses are pretty old and the aperture is set on the lens. i could figure out if it is compatible if i knew the mount type (ex. k-mount, s-mount, kaf2-mount, 67/645).
ok, i just found out that it has a "K-Bayonet mount" does anyone know if it will work on the k100d then?
One of the big advantages of Pentax cameras is that they are compatible with the lineup of lenses going back to the old K-mount. The short answer is yes, your K-mount lens will work on the new digital SLR, but of course, it won't autofocus.

I was a wedding photographer many years ago and I gave that all up when I got married. In that time everything went digital... so I am looking for something that would be similar to my Pentax 645 (medium format) camera. I like the canon EOS 1DS Mark III, but I am not sure what else is out there. I am just starting my research, so any thoughts or help on the topic would be great!
Leica, Kodak and others make medium format digital cameras in Hasselbad. If you want to stay with the medium format, that could be the best option for you. You can stay with the medium format and not have to deal with film any more. Take a look at the Leica S1 and Kodak 913.
I want to invest in a medium format camera system, I am looking at various used film systems. I am wondering what is the cheapest system that performs well? Are there any underrated cameras I can find on eBay for cheap? Systems I am looking at right now are the Hasselblad 500C/M or the Pentax 67, both these systems seem quite expensive though. What other systems are good to look at? I want either a 6x6 or 6x7, a 645 would be okay if it were super affordable.
6x6s are available inexpensively in the TLR format. I bought a very good Rolleicord for about 100 bucks, but I also recommend the Yashica Mat 124 and 124G which I have seen sell for less than $100.
You can get after market,as well as Yashica brand, telephoto and wide angle converters for a song also and they will go on both the Yashica and the Rollei made cameras.
I managed to trade into a Mamiya TL (645A format) and purchase a couple of lenses for less than $350, and it is like very good.

Pentax 645 Digital SLR Teaser Image? [Pentax Rumored to Debut ...
From what it looks like, Pentax is ready to get back in business with ultra-large high-resolution image sensors for the prosumer segment. The new DSLR camera they have on show is expected to bring “a new world” and to “challenge the next dream” of any pro-photographer starting March 11, when it will see daylight at the Camera & Photo Imaging Show in Yokohama, Japan.
No word what’s exactly under the hood of the Pentax 645D or if that’s what Pentax will be showcasing next month, what we know for sure is that we’ll love the specs and features, but will probably hate the monstrous price tag it will come attached to.
So how about you guys, in for a 30-megapixel Pentax to play with?
